The Lumberjack class: 70 Diamonds, starts with a Good Axe, and turns wood from a bottleneck into a surplus. Full L1–L3 perks, role, and how it compares to other wood classes.
The Lumberjack is the quiet workhorse class of 99 Nights in the Forest. For 70 Diamonds it starts you with a Good Axe and turns wood — the resource the whole game runs on — from a bottleneck into a surplus. This page covers its cost, its L1–L3 perks, its role, and whether it is the right first Diamond spend.

The Perks, Level by Level
- Level 1 — 20% bonus Log. Every tree you fell has a 1-in-5 chance to drop an extra Log. Small on its own, but it compounds across a whole run.
- Level 2 — 25% double Sapling. A quarter of your trees drop two saplings instead of one. This is the sustainability perk: your sapling farm refills itself faster than you plant.
- Level 3 — 20% 1–2 bonus Logs. The L1 bonus returns, now 1–2 Logs instead of one. Late-game, this is a meaningful per-swing bump.
These line up exactly with what How to Get Wood Fast describes: at full level, a 25% double-sapling chance and bonus logs of 1–2.
Why Wood Matters
Wood feeds the campfire, and the campfire's level gates the map. More wood → higher fire → deeper terrain → better chests and axes. The Lumberjack attacks that loop at the source: it makes the bottleneck (wood) simply go away, so the rest of the team can build and explore instead of foraging.
It is also one of the cheaper classes (70 Diamonds sits in the mid tier), which is why it is such a common first pick. See How to Get Diamonds Fast for the Diamonds, and Best Class for the full ranking.
The Trade-Off
Lumberjack has no combat ability and levels slowly. It is a specialist: on a team it shines when someone else fights and it keeps the base supplied; solo it is fine too, because wood scarcity is the most common early-game wall and Lumberjack erases it. If you want to fight, look at Best Class instead — but most runs want at least one wood specialist keeping the fire fed.
