Volcanic Biome in 99 Nights in the Forest

The Volcanic Biome end to end: the lava rules, the two chest types and why only two Red Spiked Chests exist, every structure and its guards, the volcano sacrifice payout order, and the enemies you meet.

Updated 2026-09-30

The Volcanic Biome is the endgame sector of 99 Nights in the Forest — the one that kills you with the floor. It holds the Infernal gear, the Cultist King, and the sacrifice altar, and every one of those rewards is paid for in lava damage and cultist waves. This page is the map: what the biome contains, what each structure guards, and the two numbers that decide whether a trip pays off.

Is It Even There?

This is the first thing to check, and it is why some runs never see a volcano.

Snow and Volcanic are a roll, not a guarantee. rblxguide's location guide puts it plainly: each run gets one outer biome — a Snow or Volcanic roll — and the Jungle is always present. A separate event report describes the same mechanic from the other direction: when an event temporarily forced the Volcanic Biome in, it replaced the Snow Biome, and afterwards "either biome will appear at random".

Our Snow Biome page covers the other side of that coin. If your outer ring came up Snow, there is no volcano this run — plan around what you got rather than waiting for one.

The Lava Rules

Lava is the reason this biome is dangerous in a way Snow and Jungle are not.

  • It damages you and ignites you. Lava pools hurt players and non-invincible enemies, and set them on fire for additional damage over time. This is also why enemies can die in it without your help.
  • It destroys your loot. Nearly every item dropped into lava disappears permanently. This sounds like trivia until your first opening goes wrong: the Volcanic Church's chest sits on a roof, and items that roll out of it can slide into the lava below. Open roof and edge chests fast, and never fight near a pool with a full sack.
  • You can fish in it. Lava fishing yields the Lionfish and the Lava Eel — the biome's own fish pool.
  • The Infernal Helmet is the counter. It is crafted specifically so you take no lava damage when it is equipped. The recipe and the environmental-lava debate are on How to Get the Infernal Helmet — and the existence of a "no lava damage" perk is itself a strong argument that lava very much does damage you by default, which is how we resolved that argument.

The Two Chest Types

The biome replaces ordinary chests with two of its own. The difference between them is the whole economy of the biome.

ChestHow rareWhat it holds
Blue Spiked (also called the Hot Chest)Common across the biomeWildfire potion, Sacrifice Totem, Lava Mine Blueprint, Crossbow
Red Spiked (elsewhere called the Legendary Infernal Chest)Only 2 in the entire biomeInfernal Sack (~80%), Infernal Sword (~10%), Infernal Crossbow (~10%)

Read that second row carefully, because it changes how the sword should be hunted. A Red Spiked Chest is most likely to hand you an Infernal Sack — the sword and crossbow are roughly 1-in-10 outcomes each. There are exactly two of these chests in a run: one at the back of the Ammo Furnace, and one on the roof of the Volcanic Church.

So the realistic plan is not "open Infernal Chests until the sword drops". It is "get both Red Spiked Chests every run, and expect a Sack most of the time". Our How to Get the Infernal Sword page covers the third and better route — the altar — and has now been corrected to reflect the payout order below.

Naming note, because it costs people real time: the Infernal Chest / Inferno Chest / Red Spiked Chest / Legendary Infernal Chest labels in circulation all point at the same red chest, and Hot Chest is the blue one. There is no separate hidden tier.

Every Structure, and What Guards It

StructureGuardsWhat's inside
Volcano3 melee + 3 crossbow cultistsThe sacrifice altar — see below. Requires campfire Level 4+
Cultist King Palace2 melee + 2 crossbow cultists4 pedestals — place four Cultist Gems to summon him. See The Cultist King
Ammo Furnace (The Furnace)4 melee + 4 crossbow cultistsDrop any fuel at the top and it outputs revolver, rifle or shotgun ammo at random. One of the two Red Spiked Chests is around the back
Volcanic Church3 melee + 3 crossbow cultistsHealing items inside; the second Red Spiked Chest is on the roof, reached by a short obby. Watch for loot sliding into the lava
Cultist Tower4 cultistsAn Infernal Chest, and a Cultist Gem from the last kill
Cultist Lavaduct3 cultistsAn Infernal Chest, and a Cultist Gem from the last kill
Scorpion Pit7 ScorpionsOne Blue Spiked Chest and three resources
Burning house—Small loot, 0–3 items

Two practical notes: the Ammo Furnace block is a known problem — the map sometimes spawns a boulder across the first ladder, and you have to go around and double-jump the cliff near the barrels to get up. And fuel for the furnace is free, so if you need ammo this is the cheapest place in the game to get it.

The Volcano: How the Payout Actually Works

This is the biome's best reward loop, and the part most guides simplify into something misleading.

The mechanic. Go inside the volcano (campfire Level 4+), get on the open-sided platform over the lava pool, and throw bodies or totems in to charge the altar. Every 8 charges pays out a reward — and the rewards come in a fixed order, repeating:

ChargesReward
8A Gem of the Forest fragment
163× Cultist Gems
24Infernal Sword or Infernal Crossbow
32Back to a Gem of the Forest fragment — the cycle repeats

The sword is the third payout, not the first. That is the detail our own Infernal Sword page had wrong before this page: eight offerings gets you a Gem fragment, and you need to reach the third cycle — around 24 charges — before the sword or crossbow is on the table.

Charges are not all worth the same:

  • A normal cultist body = 1 charge.
  • A Sacrifice Totem = 2 charges, and so does a large cultist (Brute, Juggernaut).
  • Players can be sacrificed, living or dead, once each — their bodies reappear next to the lava.
  • Lost Children can be thrown in but do not charge it — they reappear beside the lava, unharmed. Do not waste the trip.

So the efficient route is to bring Sacrifice Totems (a Blue Spiked Chest drop) rather than farming 24 individual cultists — or to save the Juggernauts you meet in higher-level Cultist Stronghold raids for the altar.

What Lives Here

EnemyNotes
Scorpion50 HP, 20 damage plus poison over time, walkspeed 20 (30 in the Scorpion Pit or nest). Drops up to one Morsel and up to one Scorpion Shell — the Infernal Helmet ingredient. Dry bushes can be Scorpion nests: linger in range and one spawns
CultistsThe melee and crossbow mix you know from the Stronghold, guarding nearly every structure above
HellephantThe hostile red Mammoth at the Hellephant Ritual Circle. See How to Tame a Hellephant
The RamAn unkillable Volcanic hazard (reported 25 damage). Do not plan to fight it — plan to leave

Also worth knowing: the biome's leafless trees give 3 logs but zero saplings, and fall to fewer Old Axe hits than normal trees. The biome is a bad place to build and a bad place to farm wood — bring your logs with you.

What to Bring

  • Ranged weapons. Scorpions punish melee range with poison, and the Hellephant ragdolls you. The Ammo Furnace means ammo is the one thing you can top up on site.
  • Something for the heat. The Infernal Helmet removes lava damage outright, which is the single biggest quality-of-life item here.
  • A cleared return path. The biome is far from camp and the biome blocks are one-or-the-other, so the walk back is long.
  • Empty sack space, and discipline about it. Items in lava are gone permanently. Do not open the church roof chest with a full sack and no room to move.
  • Sacrifice Totems if the altar is the goal. Eight charges per payout is a lot of cultists otherwise.

If wood and campfire levels are what are keeping you out, that is the real gate — see How to Get Wood Fast.

FAQ

How do I know if my run has the Volcanic Biome? Look at your outer ring. Snow and Volcanic are one-or-the-other per run; the Jungle is always there. Check your map borders early rather than assuming.

What campfire level do I need? The biome appears from Level 2+ and is fully revealed at 3, but the Volcano interior needs Level 4+.

Does lava kill you? It damages and ignites you for damage over time, and destroys nearly every item dropped into it permanently.

Can I swim or walk through it? No — treat every pool as lethal and as a loot shredder.

Where is the Infernal Sword? It is one of three possible payouts at the volcano altar (the third 8-charge cycle, around 24 charges), or a ~10% roll from one of the biome's two Red Spiked Chests. Full breakdown on How to Get the Infernal Sword.

How many Red Spiked Chests are there? Exactly two: the Ammo Furnace's rear chest and the Volcanic Church roof.

What is the Hot Chest? The blue spiked chest — the common one. Wildfire, Sacrifice Totem, Lava Mine Blueprint, Crossbow.

What is The Ram? An unkillable Volcanic entity. Avoid it.

Can I fish here? Yes — lava fishing gives Lionfish and Lava Eel.

Checked 2026-09-30. The biome's addition date (13 September 2025) and its status as the game's third biome are stated identically by rblxguide and the fandom wiki. The lava mechanics — damage plus burning to players and non-invincible enemies, permanent destruction of dropped items, lava fishing for Lionfish and Lava Eel, trees dropping 3 logs and no saplings, bushes as Scorpion nests — come from rblxguide, and the fandom wiki reproduces the same description. The chest tables (blue/hot versus red with Infernal Sack ~80%, Sword ~10%, Crossbow ~10%, and only two red chests in the biome) are from rblxguide and the fandom wiki, and the three-tier naming used elsewhere (Hot / Infernal / Legendary Infernal) maps onto the same blue-and-red pair. Structure guards and contents — the Volcano, Cultist King Palace, Ammo Furnace, Volcanic Church, Cultist Tower, Lavaduct and Scorpion Pit, with cultist counts and the boulder-blocking-the-ladder quirk — are from the fandom wiki's Volcanic Biome page. The sacrifice payout order (8 → Gem of the Forest fragment, 16 → 3× Cultist Gems, 24 → Infernal Sword or Crossbow, repeating), the 2-charge value of Sacrifice Totems and large cultists, the once-per-player sacrifice rule and the Lost Children caveat are all from the fandom wiki. The campfire gate is split across sources: Level 2+ for the biome and 3 to reveal it from Gamezebo and the fandom infobox, and Level 4+ for the Volcano interior specifically from the fandom wiki. Scorpion stats (50 HP, 20 damage, poison, walkspeed 20/30, Morsel and Scorpion Shell drops) are from Pocket Tactics, which also describes the taming cost. The Ram being unkillable at 25 damage is from rblxguide's map guide. The one-outer-biome roll (Snow or Volcanic, Jungle always present) is from rblxguide's map guide, independently echoed by Gamezebo's account of an event that forced Volcanic in by replacing Snow. The Infernal Helmet's "no lava damage when equipped" perk is from the fandom wiki's loot list. Oil Barrels spawning at campfire Level 5–6 is a single rblxguide claim and is not repeated on this page as a figure.
