How to Get the Thorn Body in 99 Nights in the Forest

The Thorn Body recipe — 4 Cultist Gems, 4 Bear Pelts, 2 Alpha Wolf Pelts and 10 Scrap — where to farm each, what the damage reflection really does, and where it ranks among all eight armor sets.

Updated 2026-09-30

The Thorn Body is the best body armor you can get without touching the Meteor event — it out-protects both the Iron Body and the Alien Armour, and it bites back at anything that hits you in melee. The only armor above it is the Obsidiron Body.

What It Actually Does — Read This Part

Two things, and the second one is usually oversold.

1. It is the second-toughest armor in the game. The fandom Armor page is explicit: the Thorn Body "grants the wearer a greater protection than the Iron Body and Alien Armour." So it sits above both the common mid-game armors, and only the Obsidiron Body is documented higher.

2. It reflects a small portion of melee damage back at whoever hit you. The same source calls it "a small portion," and it only fires when the wearer is hit with a melee attack. Arrows and ranged attacks do not reflect. This is the same mechanic family as the Poison Armour, which poisons melee attackers instead.

Do not read "reflect" as a damage build. A small fraction of one hit is chip damage — it will not kill anything meaningful on its own. The reason to wear the Thorn Body is the protection number; the reflection is a bonus that makes swarms slightly cheaper to stand in.

The rule most players learn too late: armor is permanent

Both the fandom wiki and rblxguide state the same rule: once a piece of armor is equipped, it cannot be unequipped — not even by dying and reviving — and it can only be swapped for a strictly better piece.

That has two consequences:

  • Do not equip whatever you find first. A Leather Body you put on by accident is stuck on you until something better turns up.
  • The Thorn Body is a safe thing to commit to. Because only the Obsidiron Body outranks it, wearing it does not lock you out of the real end-game armor — you can still upgrade into that. It does lock you out of going back down to Iron or Alien, which is fine, because Thorn is better than both.

Where the Thorn Body Sits Among All Armors

The fandom wiki counts seven wearable armor variants (plus the Riot Shield, which is a held item rather than worn). Here is the whole ladder, from weakest to strongest:

ArmorProtectionSpecial effectWhere it comes from
Leather BodyLowest—Spawn (Brawler class), the Forest, Good / Iron Chests, Pelt Trader
Vampire Cloak~Leather, below IronBlood Meter heals ~25% HP at night (pauses in combat)Vampire Chests at the end of the Hedge Maze (Carnival event); Vampire class spawns with it
Poison ArmourMidPoisons anything that melee-attacks youFrog Chests / Frog Invasion event; Poison Master class spawns with it
Iron BodyHigh—The Forest, Legendary / Gold Chests, Pelt Trader
Alien ArmourHigher than IronRegenerates Alien Tech Energy when hitBroken UFOs, Mothership UFOs, Alien Chests (Alien Invasion); Cyborg class spawns with it
Thorn BodyHigher than Iron and AlienReflects a small slice of melee damageRuby Chests + Tool Workshop (this page)
Obsidiron BodyHighestFills a damage bar, then an AoE explosion (~50–60 damage, knockback)Obsidiron Chests only, during the Meteor event

Two practical reads on that table:

  • If you are a Cyborg, you spawn with Alien Armour — which the Thorn Body beats, so it is a genuine upgrade rather than a side-grade. The same applies to a Vampire, whose Vampire Cloak is worse than Iron Body.
  • Only the Obsidiron Body is above you. Everything else is a step down. That is what makes Thorn a comfortable long-term wear.

One source adds numbers. The Namu wiki publishes a damage-reduction table (Leather ~22%, Poison ~39%, Iron ~62%, Alien ~69%, Thorn ~81%, Obsidiron ~82%) and lists the same order of strength. Treat those exact percentages as unverified — no other source we checked gives them, so use the ordering and ignore the precise figures. The same page also notes armor can be upgraded further with an Armour Trim Kit (a Meteor-event craft), and mentions a "Corrupted Armor" variant found in Corrupted Ruby Chests — both single-source and unconfirmed.

How to Get It

Two independent routes, and you only need one.

Route 1 — Ruby Chests

The Thorn Body is a possible Ruby Chest drop. Sources that name a specific farm point to the Cultist Stronghold, which is also the most repeatable supply of Ruby Chests in the game — the full loop, and how the Stronghold resets, is on Cultist Stronghold.

It is a loot roll, not a guarantee. Expect to open several before one pays out.

Route 2 — Craft It at the Tool Workshop

The Thorn Body is a Tool Workshop recipe. So is its sibling, the Riot Shield. Build it at the Anvil inside the Tool Workshop — the large stone-brick building with vines and an anvil icon on the map. The setup work is the same as for the Chainsaw: defeat the cultists guarding the building, collect the scattered anvil pieces from its floors, and place them on the blueprint.

A disagreement worth knowing about. Most recipe lists present the workshop as a menu you pick from. Two sources instead describe the anvil as offering its high-tier items one at a time — and notably, both name the same four items (Chainsaw, Riot Shield, Tactical Shotgun and Thorn Body). It is possible this is simply a garbled version of the widely-repeated rule that the anvil crafts only one item at a time, and the menu reading is the majority. If the Thorn Body does not appear as a recipe for you, that is the explanation to test.

The Recipe

Every source that publishes a Thorn Body recipe publishes the same one:

MaterialAmountWhere it comes from
Cultist Gem4Cultist kills — see Cultist Stronghold
Bear Pelt4Bears — see The Bear
Alpha Wolf Pelt2Alpha Wolves — see The Alpha Wolf
Scrap10Ground-up metal — see How to Get Scrap

The Alpha Wolf Pelts are the bottleneck, not the gems. Four Cultist Gems is a short Stronghold run and ten Scrap is a few minutes at the Grinder, but the two Alpha Wolf Pelts mean hunting Alpha Wolves specifically — the toughest regular wolf, not the common ones. Do that hunt first; the rest is easy.

Worth noting: the Chainsaw and the Tactical Shotgun use the exact same 4 Cultist Gem + 4 Bear Pelt + 2 Alpha Wolf Pelt + 10 Scrap recipe. So if you are already farming those materials for one of them, you are most of the way to the Thorn Body too.

Is It Worth Building?

Yes — it is the best armor you can realistically aim for short of the Meteor event. It is a straight upgrade over the Iron Body most players are wearing, it costs only a Ruby Chest run or one workshop trip, and because nothing below it can replace it, it is a decision you make once.

The one time to hesitate: if you are planning to chase the Obsidiron Body, remember you can only ever move up. Wearing the Thorn Body does not block that — Obsidiron is above it — so there is no real downside. The only armor decision that can hurt you is equipping something weak early.

For the rest of the toolkit that pairs with a frontline build, see Riot Shield, Best Weapons and All Classes.

FAQ

Is the Thorn Body a weapon? No. It is wearable body armor. You cannot attack with it.

Is it better than the Iron Body? Yes — the fandom wiki states it gives greater protection than both the Iron Body and the Alien Armour.

Does it damage everything that hits me? Only melee attackers, and only a small portion of the damage. Ranged hits, arrows and fire do not reflect.

Can I take it off later? No. Armor cannot be unequipped once worn, and can only be replaced by a strictly better piece. Since only the Obsidiron Body outranks the Thorn Body, wearing Thorn does not lock you out of anything.

Do I have to craft it? No. It is also a Ruby Chest drop, so a lucky chest can save you the whole 4 / 4 / 2 / 10 recipe.

Chest or craft — which is faster? Craft, if you can already clear the Tool Workshop. The chest route is free but random; the recipe route is guaranteed once you have the pelts.

Sources

Checked 2026-09-30. The protection tier ("greater protection than the Iron Body and Alien Armour") and the melee-only, small-portion damage reflection come from the fandom Armor page, which is also the source for the seven-armor count and the full variant list. The recipe — 4 Cultist Gem, 4 Bear Pelt, 2 Alpha Wolf Pelt, 10 Scrap — is identical across Of Zen and Computing (two pages), Stealthy Gaming, Backyard Drunkard and Rosenberry Rooms; Stealthy Gaming's table omits the 10 Scrap, so its figure is the outlier and the scrap is taken from the rest. The Ruby Chest + Tool Workshop sourcing is stated by fandom, the Miraheze items list and Backyard Drunkard.

The permanence rule ("cannot be unequipped... only swapped with a better piece") is stated identically by the fandom Armor page and rblxguide's Armour page, so it is given as fact. The numeric damage-reduction table (Leather ~22%, Poison ~39%, Iron ~62%, Alien ~69%, Thorn ~81%, Obsidiron ~82%) and the Corrupted Armor variant are single-source (Namu wiki) and flagged as unverified in the text rather than blended into the consensus. The "high-tier item is offered randomly" reading of the anvil appears in two sources (Backyard Drunkard and Rosenberry Rooms — the latter is on our unreliable list for self-contradiction), which is why the page presents it as a disagreement with the menu reading rather than either/or. Rosenberry Rooms' unique claim that only one random special item can be made per assembly is not used.
