Chest Tiers in 99 Nights in the Forest — Common to Diamond, Which Chest Holds What, and Why Opening a Ruby Chest Turns It Into a Gold Chest for Everyone Else
Almost every weapon, armour piece and Diamond in 99 Nights in the Forest comes out of a chest, and the chests have a fixed ladder: Common and Good at campfire level 2–3, Iron at 3–4, Legendary at 5, Gold in the deepest zones, Ruby the rarest of all, Diamond only from a cleared Cultist Stronghold. Every loot table, where each one spawns, the downgrade rule that eats Ruby Chests, and the four places the guides cannot agree.

Chest Tiers
Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | The loot engine. Most gear is not crafted, it is rolled |
| The ladder | Common → Good → Iron → Legendary → Gold → Ruby → Diamond |
| The real gate | Campfire level, not luck — Common needs level 2, Iron 3–4, Legendary 5, Gold a maxed fire |
| Best Diamond source | The Diamond Chest — 5 Diamonds, guaranteed per Stronghold clear |
| The rarest | The Ruby Chest, and it is guaranteed every Stronghold clear, not purely luck |
| The trap | A Ruby Chest opened by one player shows as a Gold Chest to everyone else |
| Not documented | The Corrupted and Infernal chest loot tables |
That last row before the trap matters more than it sounds. This page is the whole chest system in one place because it is scattered across roughly twenty of our own pages — the Riot Shield page says Ruby Chest, the Chainsaw page says Ruby Chest, the Shotgun and Thorn Body pages say the same thing, and none of them can say anything about the eleven other chests. If you only read the pages for the one item you want, you will never see the ladder that decides which chest you are even standing in front of.
The Two Families
Almost every guide separates chests into two families, and the split is the first thing to understand.
Classic chests spawn somewhere on the map in nearly every run: Common, Good, Iron, Legendary, Gold, Ruby and Diamond. The Diamond Chest is the odd one — it does not spawn, it is a completion prize.
Event and biome chests need a trigger. The Frog Chest needs the Frog Cave, the Alien Chest needs a Mothership run, the Ice and Cold Chests need the Snow Biome, the Hot and Infernal Chests need the Volcanic Biome, and the Obsidiron Chest needs a Meteor event plus materials you craft it from. A biome or event that never fired means those chests simply do not exist in your run.
One source counts 18 chests in total across both families. That figure is rblxguide alone and we have not seen it corroborated, so treat 18 as a report rather than a census. The fandom wiki's own Chests page lists fewer by name, which is the usual outcome when chests arrive with events and leave with them.
The Classic Ladder
| Chest | Rarity per one guide | Campfire gate | Where it turns up | Standout drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | Common | 2 | Towers, houses, campsites, the first-child cave | Old Flashlight, Good Axe, Good Sack, Old Rod |
| Good | Common | 2–3 | Ritual sites, plane crashes, playgrounds, the second-child cave | Leather Body, Berry Seeds, Revolver |
| Iron | Common | 3–4 | Deeper zones of the same places | Rifle, Strong Flashlight, Spikes blueprint |
| Legendary | Uncommon | 5 | Cultist bases, labs, the deepest areas | Iron Body, Strong Axe, Giant Sack, Medkit, Bear Trap blueprint |
| Gold | Rare | Maxed fire | Map edges and the ends of the world | Morningstar, Cultist Gem, Iron Body, Barbed Wire |
| Ruby | Very Rare | No distance gate — anywhere a chest can spawn | Deep forest, and guaranteed from a Stronghold clear | Tactical Shotgun, Chainsaw, Riot Shield, Thorn Body |
| Diamond | N/A | — | Cultist Stronghold only | 5 Diamonds, guaranteed |
Read that table top to bottom and the game stops looking random. Campfire level decides which rows exist on your map, and the map decides where in those rows a given chest can appear. Everything below that gate — which drop you actually roll — is a loot roll on a fixed table.
What Each Chest Gives You
The tables below are the ones the sources publish. Where two sources list the same item, it is listed once.
Common Chest — Bandage, Good Sack, Good Axe, Old Flashlight, Old Rod, Revolver plus ammo, Spear, Fuel Canister, Flower Seeds, Firefly Seeds, and one Diamond on the table.
Good Chest — Leather Body, Fuel Canister, Spear, Revolver plus ammo, Bandage, Good Sack, Good Axe, Berry Seeds, Old Rod, and one Diamond.
Iron Chest — Rifle plus ammo, Revolver plus ammo, Strong Flashlight, Good Sack, the Spikes defensive blueprint, Fuel Canister, Leather Body, Flower Seeds, Spear, and one Diamond.
Legendary Chest — Rifle plus ammo, Iron Body, Berry Seeds, Flower Seeds, Chili Seeds, Oil Barrel, Strong Axe, Giant Sack, Medkit, the Bear Trap blueprint, and one Diamond.
Gold Chest — Strong Axe, Iron Body, the Barbed Wire blueprint, Strong Flashlight, Giant Sack, Medkit, Oil Barrel, Morningstar, Cultist Gem, Gem of the Forest Fragment, and one Diamond.
Ruby Chest — Chainsaw, Kunai, Riot Shield, Thorn Body, Tactical Shotgun, Gem of the Forest Fragment.
Diamond Chest — five Diamonds, always. It is the only chest in the game with a guaranteed payout rather than a roll.
The bolded items are the reason players actually detour. Nothing else on this page changes a run; those five Ruby Chest drops and the Morningstar in the Gold Chest are the gear the community builds a route around.
The Event and Biome Chests
| Chest | Trigger | Documented contents |
|---|---|---|
| Frog Chest | The Frog Cave / Frog King | Poison Spear (the rarest item in it), Poison Armour, Frog Boots, Blowpipe |
| Alien Chest | Clearing the Mothership UFO | Alien Armour, Laser Sword, Laser Cannon, Ray Gun |
| Ice Chest | Snow Biome — Polar Bear Cave, Ice Temple; break the ice with an axe | Ice Axe, Ice Sword, Frozen Shuriken, Fuel Canister, one Diamond |
| Cold Chest | Snow Biome, the snow-capped variant | Ice Axe, Snowball, Fuel Canister, Leather Body, one Diamond |
| Hot Chest | Volcanic Biome | Crossbow, Wildfire, Lava Mine blueprint, Sacrifice Totem, Revolver plus ammo, Leather Body |
| Infernal Chest | Deep Volcanic Biome | Not documented — see the disagreements below |
| Obsidiron Chest | Crafted at the Meteor Tool Workshop | Obsidiron Hammer or Obsidiron Body |
| Vampire Chest | Vampire event | Vampire Cloak, Scythe, Bouncing Blade |
| Spooky Chest | Halloween event | Candy Apple, Candy Corn, Pumpkin Pie, Cotton Candy, Potion |
| Presents | Winter event | A mixed seasonal table; 5 Candy Canes are guaranteed |
| Corrupted Chest | Event | Nothing published. Both wikis leave the table as "coming soon" |
The Obsidiron Chest is the only one you can open on demand. The Meteor Tool Workshop takes 10 Meteor Shard, 5 Gold Shard and 3 Obsidiron Ingot — those three quantities come from a single source — and the chest it produces is the route to the Obsidiron Hammer.
The Downgrade Rule, Which Is Not Obvious
When one player opens a Ruby Chest, everyone else on the server sees an unopened Gold Chest from that point on. The loot is not gone from the run — the person standing next to you can still get their roll — but the chest you can see is no longer the one that was guaranteed to hold the Tactical Shotgun.
Two independent write-ups describe this, and the fandom wiki states the same rule from the other direction: the Gold Chest "replaces the Ruby Chest upon being opened." It is the same mechanic seen from the two ends.
One secondary source (dinokid) claims Ice Chests behave the same way. That is a single source and nothing else we found mentions it, so it is recorded as a claim and not a rule.
The practical consequence is a race. In a team, whoever reaches the Stronghold prize room first decides what the rest of the run sees. If the Tactical Shotgun is what you are here for, you do not want to be second through the door.
Campfire Level Is the Actual Gate
This is the part that separates players who find Iron Chests from players who find Common Chests all night.
- Campfire 2 — Common Chests are everywhere and Good Chests start appearing.
- Campfire 3 — Iron Chests become a normal sight; Good Chests have thinned out.
- Campfire 4 — the deeper map is open; Iron Chests and Legendary Chests share the zone.
- Campfire 5 — Legendary Chests become the realistic target.
- Maxed — Gold Chests in the deep zones become routine.
Ruby Chests do not follow this. One guide makes the point explicitly that Ruby Chests can spawn anywhere a chest spawns, however close to base, regardless of campfire level. They are rare, not distant. If you have been waiting to push deeper before opening chests near camp, that wait is not buying you Ruby Chests — it is only buying you better Common Chests.
There is also a loot-hint function: digging up dirt can reveal directions to hidden chest locations. The fandom wiki documents it and adds the community verdict, which is that most players consider it useless. Take that as the site's own estimate rather than a tested claim.
Where Sources Disagree
- The Infernal Chest's contents. rblxguide still lists the Infernal Chest loot table as coming soon. Other write-ups say it holds an Infernal Sack, or an Infernal Sack or an Infernal Sword. Our own Volcanic Biome page records the Infernal Sack route. Three partial answers, no complete one — we record the disagreement instead of picking one.
- The Corrupted Chest. Both the fandom wiki and rblxguide say the table is undocumented. Separately, one item page claims a "Corrupted Armour" variant inside Corrupted Ruby Chests. Single source, and it is a claim about a chest whose table nobody has published.
- How many chests exist. rblxguide says 18. The fandom wiki names fewer. Neither source counts the same list, so the total is open.
- Whether Ruby is the rarest. Most guides and our own weapon pages call Ruby the rarest chest in the game. One item page calls it the mid-high tier. The rarity column in the comparison guide above places Ruby above Gold but below nothing else, which is the consensus reading.
- The Gambler class. One guide claims a Gambler class perk that gives a 60/40 chance to upgrade or downgrade the rarity of an item rolled from a chest. Single source, and the class itself is not something we have sourced independently.
What to Actually Do With This
In priority order, for a run where you are trying to finish with something rather than just survive:
- Level the campfire as fast as the wood allows. It is not a side task, it is the progression system that decides which chest rows exist.
- Clear the Cultist Stronghold. It is the only repeatable Ruby Chest source, it resets roughly every 20 minutes, and the Diamond Chest next to it pays 5 Diamonds guaranteed.
- Take the Ice Chest before chipping the Frozen Beam if you are in the Snow Biome — it is the early source of the Ice Sword, and it is behind the same room.
- Open the Ruby Chest before anything else in the prize room. It is the only chest that can hand you the Tactical Shotgun, and it downgrades the moment someone else opens it.
- Do not grind Common Chests at night 10. By then their table is Bandages and seeds, and the campfire has moved the interesting chests further out.
One limit worth stating plainly: the sources publish contents, not rates. Nobody we read gives a drop percentage for any chest, so there is no honest way to say "the Chainsaw is a 12% roll." Every table on this page is a list of what a chest can give you, not a weighted one.
FAQ
Do chests respawn? The diamond-paying Stronghold chests respawn on the Stronghold reset. The map chests are not documented as respawning, and nothing we found contradicts that.
Which chest gives the most Diamonds? The Diamond Chest, by a wide margin — 5 guaranteed, against 1 on the Common, Good, Iron, Legendary and Gold tables. See how to get Diamonds fast for the non-chest routes.
Can I craft the good chests? Only one: the Obsidiron Chest, built from Meteor materials at the Meteor Tool Workshop. The Tactical Shotgun and Obsidiron Hammer both come from that chest as a choice, which is why the Meteor event matters to people who never wanted an hammer.
Why does my team see a Gold Chest where I opened a Ruby? The downgrade rule above. It is working as documented, not as a bug.
Is the Ruby Chest guaranteed? From a fully cleared Cultist Stronghold, yes. On the open map, no source publishes a rate.
Sources
Informal checks carried out on 3 October 2026, against the fandom wiki's Chests page, rblxguide, VG Times, Roblox Den and Dino Kid Wiki. Where a claim rests on one source — the chest count, the Ice Chest downgrade, the Gambler perk, the Corrupted Chest variant — it is named in the text rather than repeated here as fact. No source we read publishes drop rates, so none are given.
