The Frog King — How to Reach and Defeat Him
The Frog King in 99 Nights in the Forest: the 8 Frog Keys, the whirlpool portal, the four-wave frog gauntlet, the ranged tactics that work, and the Frog Chest drop rates — plus why no source can give you his HP.
The Frog King is the headline boss of the Frog Invasion update (22 August 2025) and one of the few fights in 99 Nights in the Forest that is locked behind a gate you have to farm. He is not a single enemy you stumble into — he is the last of a four-wave frog gauntlet, and the reason to run it is the Frog Chest, which holds the Poison Spear and the Poison Armour.

Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where | The Frog Cave, reached through the whirlpool portal pond |
| Unlock | 8 Frog Keys, placed at the eight-lock door |
| Cost | Free — the keys are farmed, not bought |
| The fight | A four-wave gauntlet (Green → Blue → Purple frogs) ending in the Frog King |
| Weakness | Ranged weapons; never try to face-tank the poison |
| Drops | Frog Chest — Poison Spear 3%, Poison Armour 1%, Blowdart 1%, Frog Boots 1% |
| Repeatable? | Yes — it is a farm loop for those low-rate drops |
How to Reach Him
The whole boss is gated behind eight keys, and there is no shortcut:
1. Collect 8 Frog Keys. Each key sits in a different pond, shown as a glowing key marker in the water. You fish it out — so bring a rod (the Fishing Cabin hands you the basic one). Not every pond has a key, so you are canvassing the map, one pond at a time. One key per pond.
2. Wait for the portal pond. After roughly three to four in-game days, a large pond appears near your campfire with a whirlpool at its centre. It is guarded by ordinary frogs plus one Purple Frog — clear them before you dive.
3. Jump into the whirlpool. It pulls you down into the Frog Cave.
4. Use all 8 keys at once. Inside the cave is a huge door with eight keyholes. Place all eight or the mechanism will not trigger — if you are one short, you have wasted the trip.
A minority note on the keys. The standard route is fishing the key-marked ponds. Several sources also say frogs can drop Frog Keys on death, so killing them is a secondary source — see Frogs. Treat the pond route as the reliable one and treat frog drops as a bonus.
The Fight
The boss room is a wave-based gauntlet, several guides compare its structure to the Alien Mothership event: clear each wave, and the next spawns. Four waves, weakest to strongest.
| Wave | Enemies | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Green Frogs | Small, low HP, minor damage. The only tier that does not split — it just drops a morsel. Use this wave to save ammo |
| 2 | Blue Frogs | Tougher, more damage. On death each splits into two Green Frogs |
| 3 | Purple Frogs | The largest regular frogs: most HP, heavy damage. On death each splits into two Blue Frogs — which then split again |
| 4 | Frog King | The boss. Biggest health pool, strongest attacks, and a poison attack that damages you over time |
The mechanic that kills people is the splitting. Any frog above Green, when killed, spawns two frogs of the next weaker type — so a Purple Frog becomes two Blues becomes four Greens if you let it. Swinging into a crowd lets it multiply out of control. The fix, per RBLXGuide: focus-fire one chain at a time and funnel the splits into a choke point rather than fighting in the open.
On the King himself: he fights with poison, and he is not a puzzle — he is a damage race you win by staying out of range. One guide (Backyard Drunkard) adds that he summons extra frogs if the fight drags on, so slow fights get punished; treat that as a single-source detail rather than a guaranteed mechanic. Sources also name him the Red Frog King or the Orange Frog, so if you see those labels, they are the same boss.
Why you will not find his HP here
No source publishes the Frog King's health or damage numbers. Every guide we checked describes him qualitatively — "very high health," "the strongest attacks in the game" — and stops there. Rather than invent a figure, we are telling you there is not one to quote.
The only concrete number in the frog family is the common frog: RBLXGuide puts it at about 70 HP and 5 damage per tongue lash. That is the baseline Green Frog, not the boss — do not scale it up and assume you have his stat line.
Tactics
The tactics below are named by multiple independent guides, which is why they are the ones to trust.
- Use ranged, not melee. Ray Gun, Crossbow or Bow, with far more ammo than feels reasonable — you will spend a lot of it on the waves before the King even appears. See Best Weapons for what to bring.
- Keep distance and keep moving. Do not stand still and trade hits. Circle and kite; the poison sprays are what punish a stationary fight.
- Heal before you need to. Every guide says the same thing: the poison chips you constantly, so top up early rather than waiting for low health. Carry cooked meat, bandages and medkits.
- Wear your best armour. Armour dampens both the physical hits and the poison ticks — and this is exactly the fight where the Iron Body or Thorn Body earns its slot.
- Spend cheap on waves 1–3. Save your best weapon and your healing for the King. Clearing the early frogs with basic attacks keeps your good ammo for him.
- The Alien class is a popular pick. One guide (Noleep) recommends Alien with a Ray Gun — ranged pressure with no ammo management. See All Classes.
- Retreat and reset if it goes wrong. Every guide says the same: if you are low with no heals, leave the cave and restock rather than dying. Better a reset than a lost run.
- Bring friends if you can. Group play lets one player kite while the others deal damage — Backyard Drunkard frames it as a role-based fight (DPS, tank, healer) for a reason.
What He Drops
Beating the King opens the Frog Chest, and the drops are consistently reported across every guide we checked:
| Item | Drop rate |
|---|---|
| Poison Spear | 3% |
| Poison Armour | 1% |
| Blowdart | 1% |
| Frog Boots | 1% |
Two things follow from that table. First, the rates are low — the Poison Spear at 3% is roughly a 1-in-33 clear, so this is a farm loop, not a one-and-done. Second, the chest also gives a large amount of meat, which is why some players run it as a food farm even after they have the gear.
After a win, the cave ponds open up. You can fish them using the same loot pool at the same rates as the chest, so a chest roll that misses a piece can be filled in by fishing before you leave.
What you will not get: one site claims the Frog King drops a "Beastmaster Badge", and the same site invents a whole set of frog crafting recipes (frog armour "from 10 Frog Skins + 5 Poison Glands," and so on). No other source matches any of that, and no frog-themed armour or spear in this game has a recipe — see the crafting note on How to Get the Poison Spear. Treat the badge and the recipes as fabricated.
FAQ
How many Frog Keys do I need? Eight, one per pond, and all eight must be placed at once to open the door.
Where are the Frog Keys? In ponds that show a glowing key marker in the water. Fish the marker to pull the key. Not every pond has one.
How do I get into the Frog Cave? Wait for the large portal pond near your campfire (roughly three to four in-game days in), clear its frogs, and jump into the whirlpool in the middle.
Can I fight him more than once? Yes. There is no one-time lock — it is a repeatable farm loop for the low-rate chest drops.
What is the best way to beat him? At range. Bring your strongest ranged weapon, keep moving, heal early, and wear armour so the poison does not stack up on you.
Does he drop the Poison Spear? Yes — 3% from the Frog Chest, the rarest item in it.
Is the fight soloable? It is possible with strong range and good kiting, but every guide treats it as easier with a group, where one player can kite the King while the others deal damage.

Checked 2026-09-30. The route — 8 keys fished from key-marked ponds, the portal pond appearing after a few in-game days, clearing the guardian frogs (including a Purple Frog), the whirlpool into the Frog Cave, and the eight-lock door — is described identically by Pro Game Guides, TechWiser, Noleep, Backyard Drunkard and RBLXGuide. The four-wave structure (Green → Blue → Purple → King) and the splitting mechanic (each non-Green frog becomes two of the next weaker type) are stated by TechWiser, Pro Game Guides, Backyard Drunkard and RBLXGuide; the Mothership-style wave framing is RBLXGuide and the Frog Invasion update page. The drop rates (Poison Spear 3%, Poison Armour 1%, Blowdart 1%, Frog Boots 1%) are identical across Pro Game Guides, TechWiser and Noleep, and match our own Poison Spear research. The ~70 HP / 5 damage baseline frog figure is RBLXGuide alone, and no source publishes the Frog King's own HP or damage — we say so in the text rather than estimate. The "summons frogs if the fight drags" detail is Backyard Drunkard alone, and the Alien + Ray Gun recommendation is Noleep alone; both are flagged in the text. We did not use 99nightsintheforest.wiki, which publishes a fabricated "Beastmaster Badge" drop and a set of frog crafting recipes (frog armour, poisoned spears, frog boots) that no other source mentions and that contradict the documented drop-only nature of frog gear.
