The Wolf
The Wolf in 99 Nights in the Forest is the one killable night entity you farm constantly: HP and damage, where it spawns, what it drops (Morsel, Steak, Wolf Pelt, Red Key), how to fight it, and how to tame it.
The Wolf is the backbone of almost every run in 99 Nights in the Forest. It is the one night entity you can actually kill, it drops the food and pelts you need to progress, and — unlike The Deer or The Owl — it can be tamed into a loyal guard. This page covers its stats, where it shows up, what it pays out, and the two ways to deal with it: shoot it or befriend it.

How It Behaves
A wolf wanders passively until you enter its detection radius or you damage it. Once it notices you, it chases and keeps attacking until you die or break line of sight. It is faster than a walking player but slower than The Deer, so you can usually out-run a single wolf — the danger is packs and corners.
Where it spawns:
- The Forest biome at night, once your campfire is around Level 2–4.
- The Snow and Volcanic biomes at night.
- Inside structures after dark — Medium Cabins, Large Cabins, Locked Caves. The Large Cabin always spawns with one wolf in a side room.
- Wolves that spawn on you during a night attack cannot normally be tamed, and neither can the collared guard wolves outside the missing kids' caves. More on that below.
Alpha Wolves are the tougher variant. Several sources note they start appearing past day 15, and they are the real damage dealer once tamed (see Best Pet).
What It Drops — and Why You Hunt It
| Drop | Amount | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Morsel | 2–3 | Food (cook it first — raw Morsel hurts); also Wolf/Alpha Wolf taming food |
| Steak | 1 | Food (cook it); the core Wolf taming cost |
| Wolf Pelt | 0–1 | Trade at the Pelt Trader for tool upgrades (Good Axe, Good Sack) |
| Red Key | 0–1 | Only from the last guardian wolf of a Locked Cave — it gates the Dino Kid rescue |
The pelt and key are the reasons wolves matter beyond food. A steady wolf farm feeds your camp, upgrades your gear at the Pelt Trader, and — via the Red Key — unlocks the first missing-kids cave. See Missing Kids Locations for the rescue chain.
How to Fight It
- Ranged is easiest. Revolver, Rifle or Raygun keep you out of bite range. The Wolf has no ranged attack.
- Circle a tree or rock. Like The Deer, its pathing is weak — a solid object between you and it often ends the chase.
- Climb. Standing on a shelf in a Large Cabin or on a Treehouse ladder makes you unreachable.
- Bear Trap insta-kills a wolf — strong value, but traps are expensive early, so save them for later or if you run Hunter.
- Don't linger in a structure at night. The game spawns wolves inside buildings specifically to push you out; clear what you came for and leave before dark if you can.
How to Tame It
The Wolf is the best value pet in the game (see Best Pet), and taming it is straightforward once you have the food:
- Tool: Old Taming Flute (from the Abandoned Animal Shelter / Domestication Cabin).
- Cycles: 3 angry faces above its head.
- Food: Steak ×6 total — that is 2 Steak per cycle across the 3 cycles. The fandom wiki, sportskeeda and allthings.how all agree on this (checked 2026-09-29). Exact food can still shift with a balance patch, so read the speech bubble in your own run before you commit your stack.
- Rule: the wolf must be undamaged to start the mini-game. A wolf that has already taken a hit cannot be tamed.
Full mechanics, flute tiers and the per-animal food table are on Taming Guide. The Wolf is your first real combat pet — cheap, common, and genuinely useful.
What NOT to Do
- Don't eat raw Morsel or raw Steak. Both restore less and the raw versions cost you health. Cook at the campfire.
- Don't try to tame a night-spawned or collared wolf. They will not take the flute — only free, undamaged forest wolves tame normally.
- Don't fight wolves empty-handed early. Open chests first; a revolver or even an Old Axe circling a tree handles them.
- Don't confuse it with The Deer. The Deer cannot be damaged at all; the Wolf dies to any weapon. If your hits are doing nothing, you are looking at the wrong animal.
