How to Tame an Arctic Fox in 99 Nights in the Forest

The Arctic Fox is the cheapest, easiest combat pet you can field in the Snow Biome — and one of the few snow animals a Good Taming Flute handles. It is fast, annoying in packs, and cheap to feed: 3 Steak + 3 Chili across three cycles. What You Need Before You Start

Step 1 — Get the Good Taming Flute

The Arctic Fox needs the Good Taming Flute, the Tier 2 flute. You do not start with it — the flute is a tier you earn:

• You begin with (or find) the Old Taming Flute at the Domestication Cabin (also called the Abandoned Animal Shelter) near camp.
• Tame easy animals — Bunnies and Wolves — to fill the flute's XP bar. See How to Tame a Wolf for the fastest early XP route.
• Once the bar is full, take the flute to the Upgrade Station (the Workshop, shown as crossed tools on the map) to upgrade Old → Good.

A note on sources: most published taming tables (games.gg, sportskeeda, 99-nights.wiki, bloxodes) list the Arctic Fox under the Good Flute; one guide (rosenberryrooms) lists it under the Old Flute. Because flute tiers are reported inconsistently between guides, and the game's own prompt is the authority, bring a Good Flute to be safe — if your flute tier does not match, the mini-game simply will not start.

Step 2 — Find the Arctic Fox

Arctic Foxes live only in the Snow Biome, and they spawn in packs of 2–5 (occasionally alone). Most guides agree they appear once your campfire reaches Level 2+, so you usually meet them while chasing the Polar Bear or the Mammoth.

Find a calm fox away from the others — and, crucially, do not damage it before you start. A fox you have already hit will not take the flute.

Step 3 — Play the Mini-Game

Walk up and step into the green circle around the fox. A vertical bar appears with a light-green target zone and a red marker. Hold to push the marker up, release to let it fall; keep it inside the green zone until the progress bar fills. Each completed attempt pacifies the fox long enough to feed it and flips one "face" above its head to happy.

Because foxes are small and fast, the mini-game is easy — easier than a Wolf. The Zookeeper class widens the green zone and makes it trivial.

Step 4 — Feed It

After each successful mini-game, the fox asks for food. Feed it 1 Steak + 1 Chili, then repeat. Three cycles total:

When every face flips to hearts, the fox is yours. Steak drops from wolves and bears; Chili scatters randomly across the map (and grows from Chili Seeds), so grab it whenever you see it — the ingredient sources are on Pet Food.

Rules That Break Taming

• The fox must be undamaged when you start. If it has already taken a hit, the flute will not work — let it reset or find another in the pack.
• Match the prompt exactly. The food a fox asks for can shift between runs or patches, so always read the speech bubble in your own run before you commit your stack.
• One at a time. Foxes are pack animals; if you aggro one, the whole group joins. Pull a single fox away from the pack before you start the flute, or you will be swarmed mid-tame.

What the Arctic Fox Pelt Is For

Killing a fox drops an Arctic Fox Pelt (0–1). Important: the Arctic Fox Pelt is not wanted by the Pelt Trader, and it cannot be turned into biofuel. Its only use is crafting warm clothing — a Beanie or an Arctic Fox Hat — at the Warm Clothing Shop. So tame the fox for the companion, and only hunt it for pelts if you need cold-resistance gear.

The Two-Pet Limit

You can keep two tamed pets at once (three as Zookeeper, five as Beastmaster — the caps are on Best Class). To tame a new one, release an existing pet first (it despawns). An Arctic Fox is a cheap, fast distractor, so it pairs well with a tanky Bear or Polar Bear.
