How to Get the Kunai in 99 Nights in the Forest
The Kunai is the Assassin's throwing knife — the only ranged weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest that never reloads. Why the class already hands you 120 of them, where to restock, and the real stats.
The Kunai is the odd one out among 99 Nights in the Forest's ranged weapons: it never reloads. There is no magazine, no reload animation, no ammo type to loot — you just throw. That single trait is why it is worth understanding, and it is also why the two questions people actually ask are "where do I get one" and "wait, don't I already have these?"
The short answer to the second question is yes. The Kunai is the Assassin's throwing knife, and the Assassin already starts with 120 of them. Most of the confusion comes from the game using two names for the same item: it is called "Throwing Knives" in the class menu and "Kunai" in your inventory.

The Naming Trap: the Kunai Is the Throwing Knives
This is the single most useful thing to know about the Kunai, because it is where most guides — including a couple of aggregators — go wrong.
The item has two names for one thing:
- The class menu lists the Assassin's starter ranged weapon as "Throwing Knives".
- The moment you are in a run, the same item shows up in your inventory as "Kunai".
So when you buy the Assassin (500 Diamonds) and spawn with "120 Throwing Knives", you have 120 Kunai. There is no separate unlock, no extra purchase, and no second version to chase. Several wikis spell this out directly, and it is the reason a lot of players who think they have "never found a Kunai" have actually been carrying a stack of them since the first minute of every Assassin run.
Why we are flagging this. One weapons table we checked lists the Kunai as "Ruby Chests or a 25-Diamond Assassin class purchase". That "25-Diamond purchase" does not survive contact with the rest of the sources — every dedicated page says the class simply starts with the knives, and the "25" almost certainly came from a different sentence: the far more common claim that a chest drop gives you 25 more throwing knives. We treat the 25-Diamond buy as a misread rather than a real mechanic.
What It Does
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Damage | 35 per throw |
| Fire rate | Fast — described as around the Raygun's rate |
| Reload | None — no magazine, no reload animation |
| Ammo | A consumable stack; empty the stack and the item leaves your inventory |
Two properties make the Kunai genuinely different from every other ranged weapon:
- It never reloads. Every gun in the game — Revolver, Rifle, Shotgun, even the alien tech weapons — stops to reload or recharge. The Kunai does not. There is no downtime window, which makes it excellent for poking a target while you reposition.
- It is consumable. This is the trade for having no reload: instead of a magazine you refill, you carry a stack of knives. When the stack hits zero, the Kunai disappears from your inventory — it is the only weapon in the game that works this way. In practice that means a Kunai is a resource you spend, not a permanent pickup, and keeping a stack topped up matters.
On the damage number. Specialised pages put the Kunai at a flat 35, and several sources instead describe it as "damage comparable to the Revolver". Those are not really in conflict — the Revolver does 25 on a body shot but 37.5 on a headshot, so the Kunai sits right in that band. Treat 35 as the working figure.
Where to Get It
Route 1 — The Assassin Class (guaranteed)
Buy the Assassin class and you begin every run with 1 Katana and 120 Throwing Knives (Kunai). That is the only way to be guaranteed a stack from the first second of a run, and it comes bundled with the class's mobility kit.
If you already own the class, you never need this page again — your problem is not getting a Kunai, it is not running out.
Route 2 — Chests (restocking)
The Kunai also drops from Ruby Chests, which is how a non-Assassin player can ever hold one.
If you are running the Assassin, chests become your supply line:
- 5% chance for any chest to spawn a Kunai at class Level 1, rising to 10% at Level 3.
- A chest Kunai comes with 25 more throwing knives, which is exactly the "25" that the misread above tripped over.
- The class's 5-star talent adds a further 10%, which stacked on the rest is why experienced Assassins describe finding a Kunai in roughly one chest in four.
Not a source: there is no crafting recipe, no trader, and no enemy that drops it. If you are not buying the class and not opening chests, the Kunai does not exist for you.
How to Actually Play With It
The Kunai is a utility weapon, not a damage carry. At 35 a throw it is nowhere near the 70-damage melee ceiling, so treat it as a tool for the moments a gun would leave you standing still:
- Open the fight at range, then close. With the Assassin's reduced health pool, every hit you avoid is worth more than the damage you deal — the Kunai is how you soften a target before you commit.
- Harass, don't duel. Its fast, reload-free cadence is built to chip a target: poke a Bear while you back off, or finish a runner that would otherwise escape into the trees.
- Aim high. Headshots are worth more, and the Kunai rewards them more than a slow weapon does because you throw far more of them.
- Farm it where it works. Sources specifically recommend it for Cultist Stronghold and Ice Temple raiding, where ranged pokes let you clear guards from behind cover.
- Watch the stack, not the health bar. The failure mode is not "it broke" — it is "I threw my last one at nothing". Re-stock from chests as you go, especially on Assassin runs.
One synergy note from the class itself: the Assassin's Level 2 crit on the first hit pairs best with a high-damage opener like the Rifle or Laser Cannon, not with the Kunai. The knives cover the gaps between those shots.
The Snow Counterpart: Frozen Shuriken
The Kunai has a biome twin you should know about before you go looking for it in the cold. The Frozen Shuriken is the Snow Biome throwable: same throwable slot, but it drops from Ice Chests in the Polar Bear Cave and Ice Temple (the same chests our Ice Sword page covers) and it applies Frost — a slow — on hit.
So the two throwables split cleanly:
| Kunai | Frozen Shuriken | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Ruby Chests / Assassin class | Ice Chests (Polar Bear Cave, Ice Temple) |
| Damage | 35 | Not well documented |
| Effect | None — raw damage | Frost (slow) |
| Reload | None | None |
If you want a throwable for its effect rather than its damage, the Frozen Shuriken is the one to look for in the Snow Biome.
Is the Assassin Worth It for the Kunai Alone?
No — and it is worth being blunt about that. You do not buy the Assassin to get a Kunai. You buy it for the mobility kit and the Kunai comes along: the class has the fastest sprint in the game (+10%), and it pays for that with a smaller health pool (down ~15%).
That trade is the whole point. If you want a cheap, reliable ranged weapon, the Revolver is free from the Armory and the Pelt Trader; the Kunai's value is speed and no reload downtime, which only matters if you are playing the fast, fragile style the Assassin is built for. The full cost-and-benefit table is on All Classes, and the class ranking is on Best Class.
Bottom line: if you run Assassin, learn to use the knives; if you do not, the Kunai is not a reason to spend 500 Diamonds — see How to Get Diamonds Fast for what that actually costs you in playtime.
FAQ
Is the Kunai free? Yes, if you own the Assassin. The class starts with 120 of them — they are just labelled "Throwing Knives" in the class menu and "Kunai" in your inventory.
How do I get a Kunai without the Assassin? Ruby Chests. You cannot craft it, buy it from a trader, or loot it from an enemy.
What is its damage? 35 per throw. Some sources describe it as "comparable to the Revolver", which does 25 body / 37.5 headshot.
Does it run out of ammo? It runs out of knives. There is no reload, but the stack is finite, and the Kunai disappears from your inventory once it is empty — restock from chests.
Is it full-auto or does it reload? It does not reload at all — that is its defining feature and the only ranged weapon that works this way.
How do I find more of them as the Assassin? Any chest has a 5% chance at class Level 1 and 10% at Level 3 to spawn a Kunai with 25 extra knives; the class's 5-star talent pushes that further.
Is it the same as the Throwing Knives I spawn with? Yes. Same item, two names.
What is the snow version? The Frozen Shuriken, from Ice Chests in the Polar Bear Cave and Ice Temple — it applies Frost.

Checked 2026-09-30. The item's identity as the Assassin's Throwing Knives, the 120-knife starting stock, the "Throwing Knives" vs "Kunai" naming split and the chest spawn rates (5% at Level 1, 10% at Level 3, +25 knives per drop) are stated consistently by 99-nights-in-the-forest.com, the 99-nights-in-the-forest.fandom.com Assassin page and rblxguide's Assassin class page. The 35 damage, the no-reload / only-non-reloading-ranged-weapon property and the consumable "disappears when empty" behaviour come from 99-nights-in-the-forest.com and the fandom Kunai page, with the 35 figure corroborated by BloxSwaps' and Bloxodes' weapon tables. The "comparable to the Revolver" framing (and therefore the 25 / 37.5 Revolver figures) is from 99-nights-in-the-forest.com and the fandom Kunai page. The Frozen Shuriken as the Snow Biome throwable from Ice Chests is from BloxSwaps and the fandom Kunai page. The Kunai's Naruto inspiration and its use in Cultist Stronghold / Ice Temple raids are single-source trivia we repeat as trivia. We did not use the "25-Diamond Assassin class purchase" claim from BloxSwaps' weapons table — every dedicated page contradicts it, and the "25" matches the per-chest knife count instead.
