How to Tame a Mammoth in 99 Nights in the Forest

The full Mammoth tame: Strong Taming Flute, five cycles, the exact 10 Pumpkin + 5 Cake, why Cake is the real bottleneck, where it spawns in the Snow Biome, and how to keep it alive.

Updated 2026-09-30

The Mammoth is the highest-HP creature in 99 Nights in the Forest — 800 HP, more than any other animal in the game — and taming one turns that wall of health into a tank that follows you home. It is also a whole-run project: the food bill is the largest of any tame, and the ingredient that gates it is the one people forget to farm.

This page covers exactly what it wants, where to find one, and the parts that actually cost people the tame.

What You Get

The Mammoth is a tank and a pack mule. Its value is not damage — it is the fact that things take a very long time to kill it, so it holds a line, soaks a wave, and hauls loose items while you do something else. Our Best Pet ranking puts it in the endgame tier and calls it "huge tank and pack mule, clears groups".

Two honest caveats:

  • It is the highest-HP animal, not the hardest-hitting one. The Polar Bear does more damage per hit. If you want a killer, that is a different tame; if you want something that refuses to die, this is it.
  • A tamed Mammoth reportedly deals about 30 damage per hit. That figure has one source, so treat it as approximate rather than a stat to plan around.

Exactly What It Wants

This is the rare case where the internet agrees. Five separate guides give the identical requirement, which almost never happens in this game:

Per cycle× 5 cycles
Pumpkin210
Cake15

If you have seen conflicting numbers for the Mammoth elsewhere, you have probably seen the same requirement written two different ways — two foods per cycle versus ten across the whole tame. Both are correct. Our Taming Guide explains the same per-cycle-versus-total confusion across every animal.

Cake Is the Real Wall

Everyone plans for the Pumpkins. The Pumpkins are not the problem.

Pumpkin comes from Farm Plots, and plots are cheap — you can dedicate a row of them and forget about it. Cake is the slow one: it is found in structures away from camp, grown in Farm Plots, or cooked as a recipe, and its growth rate is the thing people complain about. Five Cakes does not sound like much until you are waiting on them.

Three practical rules:

  1. Start the Cake line before the Pumpkin line. Pumpkin is throughput you can scale with more plots; Cake is the long pole.
  2. Do not eat your Cake for healing. This is the single most repeated piece of taming advice in the community, and it is right — a Cake spent on your own hunger bar is a Cake you now have to grow again. Rest at the campfire instead.
  3. Build the maximum number of plots you can. Our own Pet Food page covers every ingredient source in detail, and its verdict matches this one: Pumpkin and Cake are the endgame wall, and the plots are the only reliable supply.

The campfire and the plots are a wood problem before they are a food problem — see How to Get Wood Fast.

Getting the Flute First

You cannot start this tame without a Strong Taming Flute. A Good or Old flute simply will not engage the animal, and no amount of food changes that.

The route, from our Taming Guide: find an Old Taming Flute at the Abandoned Animal Shelter near camp, tame Bunnies and Wolves to fill the flute's XP bar, upgrade at the Upgrade Station (the Workshop, crossed-tools icon), repeat with an Alpha Wolf or two, then upgrade again to Strong.

Useful detail: feeding an injured pet the food it was tamed with also builds flute XP. Healing your existing pets is not wasted downtime — it is flute progress.

And the sequencing mistake worth avoiding: do not chase a Mammoth early. Turning up with a half-levelled flute and ten Pumpkins is how you lose a rare spawn.

Finding One

Snow Biome only. There is no second location, and the biome is not guaranteed to generate on every map — Snow competes with Volcanic for the outer ring slot. See Snow Biome for the freeze meter and how to survive long enough to work in there.

Things that make finding one harder than it looks:

  • It is one of the hardest spawns in the game, alongside the Bear. It is not a common sight even in the right biome.
  • A campfire gate is reported at level 4+. That comes from a single source, so treat it as likely rather than certain.

The good news: the Mammoth is neutral until attacked. Unlike the Polar Bear, it does not open the fight for you. That means you can walk up to it and start the flute mini-game without fighting it first — which is exactly what you want, because a damaged animal cannot be tamed. Do not hit it, do not let your pet hit it, and clear nearby hostiles before you begin.

The Tame, Step by Step

  1. Carry the whole bill before you start — 10 Pumpkin and 5 Cake in your sack, not "most of it". Leaving mid-tame means the animal wanders, or night arrives.
  2. Clear the area. A hostile interrupting the mini-game can reset your progress or kill the target.
  3. Start the mini-game and keep the marker in the green band. Apex animals have the narrowest band in the game, so this is the stage where the Zookeeper class and practice genuinely pay off.
  4. Feed it 2 Pumpkin + 1 Cake when it asks. One face turns happy.
  5. Repeat four more times. Five happy faces flip to hearts and it is yours.

A known glitch: players report the Mammoth sometimes refusing food at a feeding step. If a prompt will not accept an item, disengage and come back rather than burning items trying to force it.

Keeping It Alive

This is the part that matters most, because a Mammoth represents an enormous amount of farmed food.

Do not send it into every fight. The consistent advice is to pull pets away from dangerous groups and keep them out of environmental hazards. Two specific dangers:

  • Lava Mines. Tamed animals can trigger them, which makes volcanic areas genuinely hazardous for companions — relevant if you tame the volcanic variant.
  • The Deer. It does not care about your pet. Taming, or fighting, near nightfall is how people lose companions. See The Deer.

On pet death, sources disagree and you should assume the worst. One guide states a pet lost in combat is lost permanently; another says defeated pets recover and can be used again. We could not resolve it. Follow the same logic as everything else with asymmetric stakes: play as if the Mammoth is gone for good, because being wrong about that costs you ten Pumpkins and five Cakes, while being wrong the other way costs you nothing.

What is not disputed: pets do not carry between runs, a 2-pet limit applies by default, and the Beastmaster class raises it to 5. The caps are on Best Pet, and the class comparison is on Best Class.

Variants With the Same Bill

Sources describe Mammoth variants in the other biomes, and the useful part is that they share the exact same requirement — 2 Pumpkin + 1 Cake per cycle. Same flute, same five cycles, same 10 + 5.

VariantBiomeNotes
MammothSnow BiomeNeutral — the one this page is about
Lava MammothVolcanic BiomeThe same animal as the Hellephant — players used this name first. See How to Tame a Hellephant
Mossy MammothJungle BiomeReported by one source

The Hellephant is hostile rather than neutral and has less HP than the Mammoth, so it is a genuinely harder tame despite the identical food bill.

So if you have already built the Cake farm, you have not built it for one animal. You have built it for all of them.

FAQ

What flute do I need? The Strong Taming Flute (Tier 3). A Good or Old flute cannot start the tame.

How many cycles? Five.

How much food in total? 10 Pumpkins and 5 Cakes. That is 2 Pumpkin + 1 Cake after each of the five successful mini-games.

Where do I find one? The Snow Biome, nowhere else. It is one of the rarest spawns in the game.

Do I have to fight it first? No. The Mammoth is neutral until attacked — and it must be undamaged to be tamed, so do not attack it.

What is the hardest part? The Cake. Pumpkin scales with Farm Plots; Cake does not keep up as easily.

Can I tame it without the Beastmaster class? Yes. The class raises your pet limit and starts you with a flute, but it is not a requirement.

What is the Mammoth actually good for? Tanking and hauling. It has the highest HP of any animal; the Polar Bear hits harder.

Sources

Checked 2026-09-30. The core requirement — Strong Taming Flute, 5 cycles, 2 Pumpkin + 1 Cake per cycle, 10 Pumpkin + 5 Cake total — is corroborated by five independent guides (Bloxodes, Sportskeeda, Spot.Monster, Rosenberry Rooms and All Things How), which is unusually unanimous for this game and is why we state it without hedging. The Snow Biome as the only location is unanimous too, and Bloxodes adds the Lava Mammoth and Mossy Mammoth variants sharing the same requirement. Campfire level 4+ as a spawn gate is from Sportskeeda alone and is flagged as single-source. 30 damage per hit for a tamed Mammoth is also Sportskeeda alone. Sportskeeda is additionally the source for "the Mammoth is the strongest animal" — we have reframed that as highest HP, because our own Polar Bear page records the Polar Bear as the higher-damage creature and the two need to stay consistent. The feeding-glitch report is All Things How; the Cake-bottleneck and "do not eat your Cake" advice is repeated by several guides and already present on our Pet Food and Best Pet pages. Pet death permanence is genuinely disputed — Aitechtonic says a pet killed in combat is lost permanently, Finding Dulcinea says defeated pets recover — so we present it as unresolved and recommend planning for the permanent case. Flute XP from healing injured pets is corroborated by The Click, and matches our Taming Guide. Lava Mines harming companions is from The Click.
