How to Get the Flamethrower in 99 Nights in the Forest
The Flamethrower is Pyromaniac-only — 600 Diamonds, a short-range continuous flame, and meat that cooks itself. What it does, its three perks, and the fuel economy that gates it.
The Flamethrower is the Pyromaniac's signature weapon and one of the best crowd-control tools in 99 Nights in the Forest — a continuous stream of fire that burns everything in front of you and auto-cooks the meat of anything it kills. It is also, like the Katana, class-exclusive: there is no chest, no recipe and no drop. The only way to hold one is to buy the Pyromaniac class for 600 Diamonds.
This page covers what it does, the three Pyromaniac perks, and the part that actually decides whether you enjoy it — the fuel economy.

Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How do I get it? | Buy the Pyromaniac class (600 Diamonds) — you spawn with it |
| Any other route? | No. No chest, no craft, no drop, and it cannot be traded |
| Damage | 8.18 per tick, 0.05-second fire rate (~160 damage per second while on target) |
| Ammo | Fuel Canisters and Oil Barrels — 150 capacity |
| Special | Burning on hit, area damage, and kills drop cooked meat |
| Range | Short — this is a melee-range crowd weapon, not a rifle |
| Best for | Night waves, base defence, rescuing the Missing Children |
| Worth it? | Yes if you want area control — but budget for the fuel grind |
What It Does
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Damage | 8.18 per tick |
| Fire rate | 0.05 seconds between ticks (continuous stream) |
| Ammo capacity | 150 fuel |
| Effect | Sets enemies on fire (damage over time) |
| Area | Hits everything in the cone, not one target |
| Bonus | Animals killed by the flame drop cooked meat |
The damage number looks low next to the 70 of a Morningstar, and that is the point to understand: it is a per-tick figure, not per swing. At a 0.05-second tick that works out to roughly 160 damage per second while the flame is on target — which, on the published numbers, is the highest sustained figure of any weapon we can put a number to. (That is our arithmetic on the tick figures, not a sourced claim.)
Where it loses is range. The Flamethrower is described as short-ranged by every source that covers it, so you are trading the safety of a rifle for the ability to delete a whole wave at once. As the Pyromaniac's own level-3 perk hints, you are meant to be in the middle of it.
The Only Route: The Pyromaniac Class
The Flamethrower is exclusive to the Pyromaniac, and it is stricter about it than most class weapons:
- Cost: 600 Diamonds — the joint-most-expensive tier, alongside Cyborg, Vampire, Necromancer and Big Game Hunter.
- You cannot drop it. Unlike a chest weapon, the Flamethrower cannot be handed to a teammate, so a run only has as many flamethrowers as it has Pyromaniacs.
- The only weapon that runs on fuel. Every other ranged weapon uses ammo types; this one uses Fuel Canisters and Oil Barrels, which is a different supply chain entirely.
The full cost-and-roster context is on All Classes, and the role it fills is on Best Class — where it is listed as the pick for monster defence, clearing night-wave pressure.
The Pyromaniac was added in the Fishing Update, alongside the Fisherman class.
The Three Perks
This is where the class either clicks or does not:
| Level | Perk | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reload with Fuel Canisters and Oil Barrels; food is auto-cooked on drop | — |
| 2 | Canisters and barrels restore even more fuel | Kill 150 enemies with fire |
| 3 | Move faster for every burning enemy | Kill 400 enemies with fire |
Level 1 is the one that matters most, because it fixes the Flamethrower's weakness: without a reload source, a fuel weapon is a paperweight. The auto-cook on drop is a quiet second benefit — it turns every animal you kill into food that skips the campfire entirely.
Level 3 is the mobility payoff. Because the Flamethrower is short-ranged, the speed boost for each burning enemy is what keeps you alive in a crowd: you set the group alight and then outrun the ones that survive.
One trivia worth knowing: the class was shadow-buffed after release — the Flamethrower's range was increased and Oil Barrels were made usable as fuel (originally only Fuel Canisters worked). Older guides may still describe the pre-buff version.
Fuel Is the Real Cost
The Flamethrower is not gated by its damage — it is gated by what it eats. Two items feed it:
- Fuel Canisters — found around the map and in chests.
- Oil Barrels — also found on the map and in higher-tier loot, and the only renewable source is the Oil Drill, which is slow.
Two consequences every Pyromaniac learns the hard way:
- Your fuel competes with your campfire. These same canisters and barrels can go into the fire, so an early-game Pyromaniac is choosing between a warm night and a loaded flamethrower. Once your campfire is maxed, that conflict goes away and the Flamethrower gets much more comfortable.
- More Pyromaniacs make it worse, not better. Fuel is a shared, finite resource on a server, so a team with several Pyromaniacs will starve each other. One Pyromaniac is a strong pick; three is a fuel crisis.
The single best efficiency trick, straight from the fandom notes: scorch an enemy until it is nearly dead and let the burn finish it. You spend less fuel per kill, at the cost of speed. It is slower, but fuel is the bottleneck, not time.
If campfire fuel is your other headache, the whole wood-to-Biofuel loop is on How to Get Biofuel.
Leveling the Class (150 and 400 Fire Kills)
Both perks are gated behind fire kills, and there are three things to know that the requirement screen does not tell you:
- Any weapon can soften them up. Lower an enemy's health with anything and land the finishing blow with the Flamethrower — it still counts. You do not have to burn anything from full.
- The Infernal Sword and Infernal Crossbow count too, if your map rolled the Volcanic Biome — their fire also counts toward the objective.
- Bunny kills do not count. Skip them when you are farming the requirement.
Target clusters rather than single enemies: the level-2 requirement is 150 fire kills and the level-3 is 400, and the AoE flame racks those up far faster on a group than on one wolf at a time.
Where It Sits
On Best Weapons the Flamethrower is listed in the group ranked S by two tier lists — the same band as the Morningstar, Ice Sword and Poison Spear. It earns that spot for a reason none of the others can match: it is the only weapon that hits a whole crowd at once, and it is the only one that turns a kill into free cooked food.
What it is not is a general-purpose weapon. It is short-ranged, it is expensive to keep fed, and every source flags it as harder to use than a gun. Take it for what it is — a wave-clearer and a base defender — and bring something with reach for everything else.
FAQ
Can I get the Flamethrower without the Pyromaniac class? No. It is class-exclusive with no chest, recipe or drop route.
Can I craft it? No. Any guide describing a Flamethrower crafting recipe is wrong — it spawns with the class and nothing else.
Can I give mine to a teammate? No. The Flamethrower cannot be dropped.
What is its ammo? Fuel Canisters and Oil Barrels — a different supply chain from normal ammo.
Why does it feel weak per hit? Because 8.18 is a per-tick figure at a 0.05-second fire rate, not a per-swing number. Sustained, it is one of the highest-damage weapons in the game.
Does it cook food? Yes — animals killed by the flame drop cooked meat, and the level-1 perk auto-cooks anything you drop.
What class is best with it? It is the class weapon — you are always the Pyromaniac when you hold it. Pair it with a teammate who has range.
Sources
Checked 2026-09-30. The class is described identically by the fandom wiki (via the BreezeWiki mirror), Deltia's Gaming and rblxguide: 600 Diamonds, a Flamethrower starter, and the three perks (L1 reload-and-auto-cook, L2 more fuel per pickup at 150 fire kills, L3 speed per burning enemy at 400 fire kills). The class-exclusive status, the "cannot be dropped" note, the Oil Drill as the only renewable fuel source, the "fuel competes with the campfire" downside, and the Fishing Update origin all come from the fandom's Pyromaniac page. The stats (8.18 damage, 0.05-second fire rate, 150 ammo capacity), the "only weapon that runs on fuel" trivia, the auto-cooked-meat effect, and the short-range plus area description are from 99-nights-in-the-forest.com's Flamethrower page, with the class-exclusive route and the Fuel Canister / Oil Barrel ammo confirmed by TechWiser's all-weapons list. The damage-per-second figure is our own arithmetic on the published per-tick numbers. We did not use two sources that appeared in search: 99nightsintheforest.net (already on our untrusted list) describes a "survive 20 nights, craft at a Tier 3 bench with a Propane Tank and Ignition System" Flamethrower and enemy types like zombies and Wendigos that do not exist in this game, and 99-nightsintheforest.com (note: no internal hyphens, a different site from the fairly reliable 99-nights-in-the-forest.com) publishes an "Assault Rifle / Sniper Rifle / SMG / Soldier class" weapon list that is fabricated. Neither mechanic appears in any corroborating source.
