Cultist Gem in 99 Nights in the Forest — Eight Ways to Get It, Everything It Buys, and Where the Wikis Contradict Themselves
The Cultist Gem is the material that walls off the late game, and no source totals it up: every route ranked by whether it ever dries up, the full list of things it feeds, what the four-gem Cultist King summon takes, the arithmetic of building one of everything, and the places the wikis disagree.
The Cultist Gem is the gate. It does not appear in the first three tiers of anything, and the moment a run reaches tier 4 of the Crafting Bench it becomes the one material you cannot grind your way past — wood farms, scrap runs and a maxed campfire all move the needle, but gems come from cultists, from ponds, and from one snowman in the snow.
What makes it worth a page of its own is that the sources have never settled two things players actually care about: whether the drop is guaranteed, and whether the volcano gives you gems at all. This page covers every route with its odds stated wherever the sources state them, every sink in one table, and an arithmetic section that publishes no source we could find.

Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | A crafting material, not a currency — you spend it on recipes, not at an NPC |
| How many ways to get it | 8 published methods: 3 infinite and 5 temporary (the fandom count) |
| The infinite routes | Completing the Cultist Stronghold, clearing a nighttime raid, fishing the Algal or Bone Pond |
| The temporary ones | Gold Chests, clearing the Cultist Laboratory, clearing the Cultist Base, the Ice Temple, one Carrot given to the Noseless Snowman |
| Biggest sink | 4 gems each at the Tool Workshop for the Chainsaw, Tactical Shotgun, Thorn Body and Riot Shield |
| Also 4 | Summoning the Cultist King at his Volcanic Biome palace |
| Bench cost | 2 to reach tier 4, then 1 each for the Ammo Crate, Oil Drill, Giant Bed and Teleporter |
| One of everything | 22 gems — our arithmetic, shown below |
What a Cultist Gem Is, and What It Is Not
There are two gems in this game, and sources mix them constantly. The Cultist Gem is the purple cultist one; the Gem of the Forest is a separate item assembled from four fragments that you drag together, and it is what tier 5 of the bench asks for.
| Cultist Gem | Gem of the Forest | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | A single gem | 4 fragments merged by dragging them into each other |
| Feeds | Bench tier 4, the four tier-4 structures, four Tool Workshop items, the Cultist King summon | Bench tier 5 and the tier-5 trio (Respawn Capsule, Temporal Accelerometer, Weather Machine) |
| Where sources say it comes from | The last cultist of a raid or cleared location, the Stronghold, the Ice Temple, ponds, Gold Chests, the Laboratory, the Cultist Base, the Snowman | The Frozen Beam in the Ice Temple, the volcano ritual, Jungle temples, Ruby Chests, Very long runs |
| Are they interchangeable | No | No |
The confusion is not hypothetical: the fandom Cultist Gem page describes the tier-5 machines as something you spend Cultist Gems on, which contradicts the fandom items page, which says the tier-5 machines take a Gem of the Forest. We come down on the Gem of the Forest reading, for the reasons in the disagreement section below.
One practical consequence: because the two are separate, a run that farms only gems you cannot use yet is not preparing you for tier 5, and a run that merges four fragments early has spent the week's most contested material on something that does not unlock tier 4.
Every Route, Ranked by Whether It Dries Up
The fandom page counts eight methods, three of them infinite and five temporary. That is the most useful frame in the whole topic, because the infinite ones are the only routes you can build a run plan around.
| Route | Infinite? | What it actually pays | Guaranteed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completing the Cultist Stronghold | Yes | A full clear is documented as dropping 2 Cultist Gems alongside a Gem of the Forest fragment, a Ruby Chest and a Diamond Chest | Guaranteed per clear |
| Clearing a nighttime raid | Yes | The last cultist killed drops one | Guaranteed on the last kill only |
| Fishing the Algal Pond or Bone Pond with any rod | Yes | Random drop per catch | No — chance-based |
| Fully charging the volcano | Listed as a source, but see the disagreement below | 3 gems by RNG on the fandom reading | No |
| Gold Chests | No | Random drop | No |
| Clearing the Cultist Laboratory | No | Cultist Gem | Reported as a clear reward |
| Clearing the Cultist Base | No | Cultist Gem | Reported as a clear reward |
| Raiding the Ice Temple | No | Gems held in the Frozen Beam | Partly — see below |
| One Carrot to the Noseless Snowman (snow biome) | No | 1 Cultist Gem per carrot | Reported as a one-off interaction |
Three notes that save runs.
Fishing is the only route with a documented "best" version. The fandom page names the Algal Pond with a Strong Rod as the efficient pipeline and notes the Bone Pond drops gems less often than the Algal Pond. Which rod you hold changes the rate; which pond you stand at does too. We have no fishing page on this site yet, so we cannot cross-check that route against a second source — treat it as a single-source finding.
The carrot is one interaction, not a farm. One carrot in, one gem out, in the snow biome. It is a bonus, not a route.
The Ice Temple is where the count stops reconciling. Our own Ice Temple page documents the Frozen Beam as holding both gems, and our Jungle Biome page documents each Jungle temple paying 3 Cultist Gems guaranteed — a number no other source we checked mentions. The fandom list counts the Ice Temple as one of the five temporary sources rather than an infinite one. So the Jungle temple figure rests on one page: ours.
What the Gems Are Spent On
Every sink in one place, with the recipe around it so you can see which gems you are really short of.
| Sink | Gems | Rest of the recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting Bench tier 4 | 2 | 30 Wood + 20 Scrap — this is the upgrade that unlocks everything below |
| Ammo Crate | 1 | 20 Wood + 30 Scrap |
| Oil Drill | 1 | 25 Wood + 35 Scrap |
| Giant Bed | 1 | 20 Wood + 30 Scrap — pushes the day counter |
| Teleporter | 1 | 15 Wood + 25 Scrap — the only gem sink with no cap at all |
| Chainsaw | 4 | 4 Bear Pelt + 2 Alpha Wolf Pelt + 10 Scrap |
| Tactical Shotgun | 4 | Same recipe as the Chainsaw and the Thorn Body |
| Thorn Body | 4 | Same recipe as the Chainsaw |
| Riot Shield | 4 | 4 Bear Pelt + 6 Wolf Pelt + 6 Bunny Foot + 25 Scrap — the only one of the four with a different recipe |
| Cultist King summon | 4 | Four pedestals at the Volcanic Biome palace, one gem each, once per day |
The shape that matters: the bench ladder costs 6 gems in total, and the workshop weapons cost 16. The bench is cheap. The four-gem cluster is the whole late game.
There is also one sink that is easy to miss. The Teleporter is the only item on this list with no ceiling — you can place more than one, and every extra one costs another gem. If you have spare gems late in a run, that is the only place they convert into convenience rather than into one item.
The Arithmetic Nobody Publishes
No source we found totals the demand side, and the one published total is wrong in a way worth naming.
Our arithmetic, from the table above:
- Bench path: tier 4 upgrade 2 + four tier-4 structures × 1 = 6 gems
- Workshop path: four items × 4 = 16 gems
- One of everything on the bench and at the workshop: 22 gems.
- Add the Cultist King summon and you are at 26 for a run that does all three.
The published total disagrees, and only on the bench half. Two guides print the same figure — that crafting everything at least once takes 6 Cultist Gems and 4 Gems of the Forest. The 6 is exactly our bench number; the four 4-gem workshop items are simply not in it. So the calculator figure is a bench-only number wearing a whole-run label. If you are budgeting a run, use 22.
Where Sources Disagree
Five live contradictions. None of them is cosmetic — three change how you plan a run.
1. Does the volcano give Cultist Gems? The fandom Cultist Gem page says fully charging the volcano hands you 3 gems by RNG, and the same page names sacrificing eight cultists to the volcano as one of the two best bulk methods. Our own Volcanic Biome page documents the volcano ritual paying a Gem of the Forest fragment on its 8-step and 32-step cycles instead. So: one family of sources says the volcano pays the purple gem, ours says it pays the other gem. We cannot resolve this, and if you are planning around the volcano, plan it as "possibly 3 gems, possibly a fragment" rather than as a reliable four.
2. Is the tier-5 machine a Cultist Gem or a Gem of the Forest? The fandom Cultist Gem page says you spend Cultist Gems to activate the Respawn Capsule, Temporal Accelerometer and Weather Machine. The fandom items page, VG247, and four recipe round-ups all say 1 Gem of the Forest each, and tier 5 of our own Crafting Bench page says the same. Fandom is contradicting itself inside two pages. We follow the majority: the tier-5 machines take the merged Gem of the Forest, not four Cultist Gems.
3. Whose last kill drops the gem? Three different scopes are published:
- the fandom Cultist page: the last cultist in a raid;
- BloxSwaps: "the last Cultist killed anywhere", and elsewhere "the last cultist killed in a raid or location";
- our site: the last cultist of a raid, or the last one killed in a cleared location.
The practical difference is where you must be standing when the kill happens. See The Cultist for the raid side of this; this page only records that the scope itself is unsettled.
4. How many gems does a full Stronghold clear give? BloxSwaps says a full clear drops 2 Cultist Gems. The fandom Cultist Gem page lists completing the Stronghold as an infinite source without naming a count, and our Cultist Stronghold page describes the same thing as a lottery — you can do everything right and come home empty. If the fandom "infinite" claim is right, the Stronghold is the best route in the game; if BloxSwaps is right, it is a route that pays 2 and resets. That single number decides whether the Stronghold is your main loop or your backup.
5. Why 8 methods if the count does not close? The fandom page's own arithmetic — 3 infinite plus 5 temporary, eight methods — never accounts for the volcano sentence it puts in the middle. So the "8" is a headline number rather than a list of eight things, and the volcano is the eighth thing that got folded in mid-paragraph. We publish the routes rather than the headline.
The Recycler, and the One Conversion That Helps
The Recycler on our How to Get Scrap page runs two conversions that matter here: Gem of the Forest → Cultist Gem, and Cultist Gem → Scrap.
The first one is the escape hatch worth knowing about. If a run dumps four fragments into a merged Gem of the Forest and you then realise tier 5 is three days away and tier 4 is today, the Recycler can turn that merged gem into the Cultist Gems you actually need. It is the only documented path from one gem family to the other.
The second is the one to avoid. A surplus Cultist Gem ground down to scrap is a gem you can no longer summon the King with or craft the Chainsaw with. Late in a run, when the bench is finished and the workshop weapons are made, liquidating gems is reasonable; before that it is self-harm.
FAQ
Is the Cultist Gem a currency? No. It is a crafting material. Nothing buys it, nothing sells it back, and the only NPC-adjacent thing it does is sit in the pedestals that summon the Cultist King.
What is the fastest way to get a lot of them? The fandom page names two: fishing the Algal Pond with a Strong Rod, or sacrificing eight cultists to the volcano. Given the volcano disagreement above, the fishing route is the one we would plan around.
Do I need the Cultist Gem before tier 4 of the bench? Nothing in tiers 1 to 3 uses it. The wall starts at tier 4, which is 2 gems, and every tier-4 structure after that is 1 more.
Can I get tier 5 with Cultist Gems? On one fandom page, yes. Everywhere else, no — tier 5 takes a Gem of the Forest built from four fragments. See disagreement 2.
Why is my gem income so erratic? Because four of the eight routes are chance-based and the rest depend on getting to the last kill. A route that "drops a gem" usually means the last cultist died on your screen; that is a much narrower condition than it reads.
Does the Blacksmith class help? Yes, in one specific place. A Blacksmith at a high enough level skips the single most expensive bench step for free, and the Cultist Gem cost of that step is included — so the 2-gem tier-4 upgrade is the one that gets skipped.
Sources
Checked 2026-10-03. The eight-method split, three infinite and five temporary, the Algal and Bone Pond fishing routes and the Strong Rod, the Snowman carrot exchange, and the 4-gem King summon come from the fandom Cultist Gem page; the same text appears on rblxguide, which reproduces it rather than independently reporting it, so we count that as one source with two publications. The Cultist King summon location and its once-per-day limit and the 2-gem Stronghold clear come from BloxSwaps. The full recipe table for the four Tool Workshop items and the tier-4 and tier-5 bench costs corroborate cell-for-cell across Of Zen and Computing's recipe list, BloxBoom, Sixstoreys and Vintage Vinyl News, which is why they are stated without hedging. The Gem of the Forest is four fragments merged by dragging is stated by VG247 and the fandom items page. The volcano payout disagreement, the tier-5 gem disagreement and the three scopes of the last-kill rule are our own comparison of those pages against our Volcanic Biome, Crafting Bench and The Cultist pages. The 22-gem total is our arithmetic from the table above; the conflicting 6-gem total is carried by two guides that print the same figure, which is why we treat it as a bench-only number.
Sources we did not use: 99nightsinforest.com publishes a wiki mirror whose drop tables conflict with the fandom Cultist page on weapon damage, and 99-nightsintheforest.com carries a mirrored Cultist Gem stub with no source discipline; neither is used for any figure above.
