Frogs in 99 Nights in the Forest — The Four Types, the Split Mechanic and How to Stop the Swarm

How frogs work in 99 Nights in the Forest: when they emerge from the ponds, the Green, Blue, Purple and King variants, why every kill spawns two more frogs, what they drop including Frog Keys, and how to tame one.

Updated 2026-10-02

Frogs are the reason the water in 99 Nights in the Forest stops being safe. They are small, they hit for almost nothing, and they are genuinely dangerous — because killing one makes two more appear.

That split mechanic is the whole subject of this page. Understand it and frogs go from "the most annoying enemy in the game" to a manageable, even farmable, nuisance. This page covers the ordinary frogs; the boss fight, the 8 Frog Keys and the Frog Chest are on The Frog King.

When and Where They Show Up

Frogs are not guaranteed every run — sources compare them to the alien event in that respect. When they do arrive:

  • They emerge from ponds and lakes, roughly 10 minutes into a run, and sources most often tie the first appearance to Day 3.
  • The notification is "Something has emerged from the ponds".
  • Once they are out, they populate nearly every water source on the map, which is what turns previously safe fishing and watering spots into danger zones.

The Four Types

From weakest to strongest:

TypeRoleNotes
Green FrogThe common oneLow health, minor damage. Does not split when killed
Blue FrogMid tierLarger and tougher; splits into 2 Green
Purple FrogGuard tierAppears at larger ponds; high health, stronger poison. Splits into 2 Blue
Frog King / Orange FrogThe bossVery high health, fast (walkspeed 24). Splits into 2 Purple. Full fight on The Frog King

All of them attack with a long tongue that deals damage and applies poison.

The Split Mechanic — Read This Before You Fight

When you kill a frog, it spawns two frogs of the next weaker type. The chain runs all the way down:

Frog King / Orange → 2 Purple
Purple → 2 Blue
Blue → 2 Green
Green → nothing (drops a Morsel)

The consequence is arithmetic, and it is worth doing once. If you kill a Frog King, the cascade produces 2 Purple, then 4 Blue, then 8 Green — 14 additional frogs from that one kill (our calculation from the split rule above; no source states the total). A careless boss kill can leave you swarmed the moment he falls.

Two practical rules fall out of it:

  • Never fight frogs near water. Sources are explicit that they can respawn there. Lure them to open ground first.
  • Take the small ones out first. Clear the Greens that are already on the field before you commit to a bigger kill that will add more bodies. And in the Frog Cave, do not rush to kill everything at once — the wave grows as you go.

How to Fight Them

  • Ranged, always. Their damage is only 5 but the poison stacks, and standing next to a pond while you swing is how it gets applied.
  • The Rifle is the recommended all-rounder — enough range to stay clean, and it works well on Purple Frogs in particular.
  • The Laser Cannon is the pick for waves, and a shotgun for burst if something closes on you.
  • Carry healing. Poison is the thing that actually drains you, not the tongue.
  • Fight in the open, away from ponds and away from corners where a spawning pair can pin you.

What They Drop

DropFrom
MorselThe reliable one — a Green Frog drops one when it dies
Frog KeyA chance drop from frogs

There is a wrinkle worth knowing: sources disagree slightly on which frogs drop keys. One says Green drops the Morsel while the others carry the key chance; another says all types have a chance. Either way, killing frogs is a secondary source — the reliable route to Frog Keys is fishing them out of key-marked ponds, one per pond, and you need 8 to open the Frog Cave. See The Frog King for that route.

Can You Tame One?

Yes — and it is one of the cheapest tames in the game.

FluteOld Taming Flute
Stages2
Food2 Mackerel total (1 per stage)
WherePonds and the Frog Cave

Hold the flute, walk up to a frog, win the minigame, feed it a Mackerel, repeat once. Full mechanics on the Taming Guide.

Is it worth a slot? Honestly, no — frogs are not strong allies compared to a Wolf or an Alpha Wolf. But they are cheap, and you can tame more than one, so a small group will follow you into a fight. It is a fun, low-cost pet rather than a build-defining one.

Where Sources Disagree

When were they added? 22 August 2025 is given by two independent sources and matches our Frog King page. One mob list says "August 2026", which is a year out and contradicts everything else. We use 2025.

No source publishes frog HP. Every type is described qualitatively — "low", "medium", "high", "very high" — and no figure is given for any of them. We are not going to invent one.

10 minutes or Day 3? Sources say both, and they are probably measuring the same thing two ways (a run day is roughly that length early on). Both are stated on this page rather than picking one.

Which frogs drop keys? Covered above — Morsel-vs-key by type, or a key chance on all types. The pond route is the reliable one either way.

FAQ

When do frogs appear in 99 Nights in the Forest? About 10 minutes into a run, commonly around Day 3, after the message "Something has emerged from the ponds". They do not appear in every run.

How much damage do frogs do? 5 per hit, plus a poison effect that lingers. The poison is the real cost.

Why do more frogs keep appearing? Because every frog you kill splits into two of the next weaker type. Only the Green Frog dies for good.

How many frogs does one Frog King turn into? Two Purple, which become four Blue, which become eight Green — 14 additional frogs in total (our calculation from the split rule; no source states the total).

What do frogs drop? A Green Frog drops a Morsel. Frogs can also drop Frog Keys, but fishing the key-marked ponds is the reliable way to get those.

Can you tame a frog? Yes — Old Taming Flute, 2 stages, 2 Mackerel.

Where should you fight them? Away from water, in the open. Frogs can respawn near ponds.

Sources

Checked 2026-10-02. The addition date (22 August 2025, Frog Invasion update), the 5 poison damage tongue attack, the four-type hierarchy (Green, Blue, Purple, Frog King / Orange) and the split rule (each kill spawns two of the next weaker type, with Green as the only exception) are stated identically by the Miraheze wiki, 99nightsinforest.com and RBLXGuide; Finding Dulcinea repeats the hierarchy and split chain and is used only to corroborate it. The spawn timing (about 10 minutes in, commonly Day 3, from ponds and lakes, with the "Something has emerged from the ponds" notification, and not guaranteed every run) is the Miraheze wiki and 99nightsinforest.com. The drops (Morsel from Green; a Frog Key chance) are the same pair, with the "all types can drop a key" variant from Miraheze noted in the text. The taming cost (Old Flute, 2 stages, 2 Mackerel) is 99nightsinforest.com and Bloxodes, and matches the Green Frog entry on our Taming Guide. The Frog King's walkspeed of 24 is RBLXGuide alone. The tactical advice (never fight near water, clear weaker frogs first, use ranged, Rifle as the all-rounder and Laser Cannon for waves) is 99nightsinforest.com. The 14-frog cascade total is our own arithmetic from the split rule and is labelled as such — no source states it. No source publishes frog HP, so none is given. One wiki with otherwise-consistent frog data was excluded because it has previously published fabricated material for this game.
