The Scorpion in 99 Nights in the Forest — Spawns, Poison, the Shell Drop and How to Tame One
Where Scorpions spawn (Volcanic Biome, nests and pits), their 50 HP and 20 damage plus poison, how to fight them without bleeding out, the rare Scorpion Shell drop that gates the Infernal Helmet, and the Old Flute taming route.
The Scorpion is the Volcanic Biome's answer to the Frog: a small, fast hostile whose real threat is not the hit, it is the poison it leaves behind. It is also the gate on the Infernal Helmet — its shell is one of only two ingredients — and, unusually for a hostile, something you can recruit.
That combination makes it one of the few entities in the game worth a dedicated page: it is a threat, a crafting source and a pet all at once.

Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | A hostile animal, added with the Volcanic Biome update |
| Health | 50 (one source says 75 — see below) |
| Damage | 20 per hit, plus a chance to apply poison damage over time |
| Walk speed | 20 (faster around nests and pits) |
| Where | Volcanic Biome only — Scorpion Nests and the Scorpion Pit |
| Drops | Morsel (0–1) and Scorpion Shell (0–1, rare) |
| Tameable? | Yes — Old Flute, 2 stages, 2 Steak + 2 Morsel total |
| Badge | Pest Control — kill 100 Scorpions |
Where It Spawns
The Volcanic Biome, and nowhere else. Every source agrees on that. Sources also tie their spawn to a Level 2+ campfire, which is the same upgrade that unlocks the map and gives you access to the volcanic region in the first place.
Within the biome there are two structures:
| Location | Scorpions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpion Nest | ~4 | Dry bushes double as nests — walk into range and one spawns immediately |
| Scorpion Pit | 7 | All seven can swarm at once; contains a Blue Spiked Chest and three resources |
The Pit is the one to prepare for. Seven Scorpions stacking poison on you at the same time will end a solo run that walked in blind.
How It Behaves
- It wanders until you enter its detection radius or damage it, then it runs at you and attacks in range.
- It gives up if every player leaves its detection radius — or if it gets too close to a lit campfire. That is your panic button: Scorpions will not chase you onto a lit campfire.
- It teleports home if it strays too far from its spawn point without a target, which is why nests keep producing them.
- Poison is a chance, not a guarantee. Like Frogs, a Scorpion attack may apply poison damage over time. The hit itself is only 20; the bleed is what kills you.
How to Fight It
Use ranged, always. This is the single most repeated piece of advice across every source, and the reasoning is the same everywhere: melee range is where the poison lands, and poison is what actually drains you. A Rifle or Tactical Shotgun keeps you clean.
- Pull them one at a time. The threat scales with numbers, not with the individual Scorpion.
- Do not wade into a Pit blind. Back into a choke point and let them come to you.
- Do not fight in tight volcanic terrain with no escape route.
- Retreat to a lit campfire if things go wrong — aggression drops.
- Bring bandages. Between poison ticks and lava, this biome punishes sloppy routing more than any other.
At 50 HP a single decent hit or two drops one, so the fight is never the problem. The problem is standing where three of them can reach you.
Drops
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Morsel | 0–1 | The common drop |
| Scorpion Shell | 0–1 | Rare — the one you are here for |
Scorpions have one of the lowest drop rates of any entity in the game, which is the whole reason the Infernal Helmet is a grind rather than a purchase. Plan for a lot of kills.
What the shell is for:
- Infernal Helmet — the recipe is 6 Scorpion Shells + 1 Cultist King Antler. Take 8–10 shells on a farming trip rather than 6; running short after you already have the Antler is the annoying version of this grind.
- A permanent damage buff — the Big Game Hunter class can consume Scorpion Shells for one. If you play that class, shells are not purely helmet fuel. See All Classes.
How to Tame One
Yes — and it is cheap. The Scorpion is one of the six animals the starting Old Taming Flute can handle.
| Flute | Old Taming Flute (level 1 — the one from the pot in the Domestication Cabin) |
| Stages | 2 (one source says 3) |
| Food per stage | 1 Steak + 1 Morsel |
| Total | 2 Steak + 2 Morsel |
| Where | Volcanic Biome — nests and pits |
The loop is the standard one: play the flute, win the 30-second minigame (keep the red bar inside the green zone, same as fishing), feed the food it asks for, repeat until the faces above its head turn into pink hearts. Full mechanics on the Taming Guide.
Is it worth a pet slot? It is rated as biome-specific utility rather than a combat pet — see Best Pet. At 2 Steak and 2 Morsel it is one of the cheapest tames in the game, and if you are already in the Volcanic Biome farming shells, recruiting one costs you almost nothing extra. It is not the pet you bring to a boss fight.
The Pest Control Badge
Killing 100 Scorpions earns the Pest Control badge, which also unlocks a Volcano Mini furniture item. At a 0–1 shell drop rate and a nest-based spawn, expect this to arrive on its own while you are farming for the Infernal Helmet rather than as a target you chase deliberately. Difficulty is rated 5.
Where Sources Disagree
Health: 50 or 75? Four sources say 50; one structured wiki lists 75. We use 50 as the majority reading, and note that at 50 HP the fight is trivial anyway — the poison is the threat either way.
Drops. Four sources say Morsel (0–1) and Scorpion Shell (0–1). One structured wiki instead lists "Morsel 2–3x guaranteed, Steak 1x guaranteed" and does not mention the shell at all. That reading contradicts four others and conflicts with the Infernal Helmet recipe, so we go with the majority.
Taming stages: 2 or 3? Most sources say 2 (2 Steak + 2 Morsel total). One says 3. Our Taming Guide lists it as "2–3" to cover both; budget for 2 and carry a spare.
Walk speed. 20 is the quoted figure, with sources agreeing they move faster around nests and pits. No source gives the exact faster number.
FAQ
Where do Scorpions spawn in 99 Nights in the Forest? Only in the Volcanic Biome, at Scorpion Nests and the Scorpion Pit. A Level 2+ campfire is required.
How much damage do they do? 20 per hit, plus a chance to apply poison damage over time. The poison, not the hit, is the danger.
Do they drop Scorpion Shells every time? No. The shell is a rare 0–1 drop, and Scorpions have among the lowest drop rates in the game.
What is the Scorpion Shell for? The Infernal Helmet — 6 shells plus 1 Cultist King Antler. The Big Game Hunter class can also eat them for a permanent damage buff.
Can you tame a Scorpion? Yes. Old Taming Flute, 2 stages, 2 Steak and 2 Morsel in total.
How do you stop them attacking? Get to a lit campfire or leave their detection radius entirely. Both break aggression.
How many Scorpions are in a Scorpion Pit? Seven, and they can all engage at once. Clear them from a choke point.
