How to Get the Rifle in 99 Nights in the Forest
Every way to get the Rifle: the Gunsmith Shed, Iron and Legendary Chests, and the Pelt Trader's third trade. Plus what it actually does for damage, and how it compares to the Revolver.
The Rifle is the mid-game ranged weapon most players graduate to after the Revolver. It one-shots a Wolf and is the cheapest reliable answer to a Bear short of a Laser Cannon. This page is the practical "where do I get one" — damage numbers and how it ranks live on Best Weapons.

The Four Ways to Get a Rifle
There is no single source for the Rifle. Across the published guides the same four routes show up every time.
| # | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gunsmith Shed | A workstation you can build or find that assembles the Rifle. The most reliable "craft it yourself" path. |
| 2 | Iron Chest | A mid-tier chest (needs campfire Level 4, like every Rare chest). |
| 3 | Legendary Chest | A top-tier chest; lower odds than the Iron Chest but it also drops the high-end gear. |
| 4 | Pelt Trader — third trade | He arrives on Day 2. His trade ladder is Good Axe → Spear or Revolver → Strong Axe or Rifle → best available. The Rifle is the third rung, so you need pelt XP first. |
The Pelt Trader route is covered in more detail on Best Weapons and the flute/XP loop that gates it is on Taming Guide. If you want the Rifle fast without grinding, the Gunsmith Shed or an Iron Chest is the realistic target.
What the Rifle Actually Does
This is where sources stop agreeing, so read the table, not a single number.
| Source | Damage | Magazine / reload |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated entity wiki (99-nights-in-the-forest.com) | 50 (headshot 75) | 1 round, ~5 s reload |
| Best Weapons (this site, single source) | 60–90 | 6 per reload |
| namu.wiki | ~80 (some builds 50) | not stated |
| bloxswaps | 60 (headshot 90) | not stated |
Treat the exact damage and magazine size as version-dependent. Patches move both numbers, and no two guides publish the same figure. What is stable is the role: it is a high-damage, slow-firing rifle that beats everything up to a Bear.
For scale, enemy health is roughly Wolf 75 and Bear 350 (see Best Weapons). That is why the Rifle one-shots a wolf and takes four to six shots to drop a bear — and why it is the go-to for the bear caves on Missing Kids Locations.
Rifle vs Revolver
| Revolver | Rifle | |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | 25–37 | 50–90 (per-source range) |
| Fire rate | Fast, 6-round cylinder | Slow, ~1 shot |
| Best for | Wolves, cultists at close range | Bears, anything you would rather not touch |
| How you get it | Ranger class (70 Diamonds), Pelt Trader, chests | Gunsmith Shed, Iron/Legendary Chest, Pelt Trader third trade |
If you are choosing one, the Revolver is the early pick and the Rifle is the upgrade. Most players carry both: Revolver for the swarm, Rifle for the bruiser.
Sources
The four acquisition routes (Gunsmith Shed, Iron Chest, Legendary Chest, Pelt Trader third trade) appear consistently across rblxguide, 99-nights-in-the-forest.com, namu.wiki and bloxswaps, all checked 2026-09-30. Damage figures are split as shown above; none are corroborated across more than one or two sources, so confirm in your own build.
