Frog Cave: the Eight-Key Dungeon Under the Whirlpool — the Frog King's Split Chain, the Chest Rates, and the Badge That Is the Real Payoff
Everything about the Frog Cave in 99 Nights in the Forest that the boss guide leaves out: the two gates (Campfire Level 2 and 8 Frog Keys), the whirlpool pond with its no-diving sign, what the room looks like inside, when the Frog King spawns, why killing him cascades into fourteen frogs, the Frog Chest's 1–3% rolls versus its guaranteed container, the cave pond fishing route, and the Beastmaster badge — including the reward number every source disagrees on.
The Frog Cave is the rare dungeon you do not have to go hunting for. The Frog King is the headline, but the headline has its own page. This page is about the place: the pond with the whirlpool and the no-diving sign, the cave underneath it, the two separate gates on the way in, what the room actually contains, and the single fact most guides bury — that the King does not stay dead quietly on the floor when you drop him.
It is also the most mis-valued location in the game. The Frog Chest rates are 3% and 1%, which makes the loot look like a waste of eight keys. The Beastmaster badge is where the diamonds actually are.

What the Place Is, and the Two Gates
Officially the Frog Cave is a Structure, and its listing marks it as Conditional — meaning it exists only while a condition holds. That condition is not a biome roll, which is what makes this place unusual next to the Ice Temple. You do not need to win a Snow-or-Volcanic coin toss to reach it. What you need is a working campfire and eight keys.
The listing sets out both gates plainly: requires Campfire Level 2, and requires 8 Frog Keys. The campfire level is worth noting because it is a pre-run investment — if your fire is still on level 1, the cave is not on the table this run regardless of how many keys you own. Treat it as a goal to aim for while you are farming the keys rather than a limit you discover on arrival.
One caution on that gate: the Campfire Level 2 prerequisite comes from a single location listing, and none of the guide-level write-ups mention it. We take it seriously because it is the kind of detail that only gets recorded by someone reading the game's own location data, but we would not build a plan around it without checking the door yourself.
The other gate, the keys, is a farm — see the entrance section below.
Getting In: the Whirlpool Pond and the Eight Keyholes
The entrance is a whirlpool at a pond. One guide describes how to recognise it: look for a frog pond ringed by croaking green guardians with a giant whirlpool turning in the middle — and a "no diving" sign next to it. Ignore the sign and jump in, and you go down.
That pond does not exist from the first minute of a run. Guides describe it appearing near your campfire after roughly three to four in-game days, and note that frogs themselves turn up around 10 minutes into a run, commonly around Day 3, flagged by the on-screen message "Something has emerged from the ponds." Frogs are not in every run — like the alien event, they are conditional — so the farm only starts once they have appeared.
Once you are down, you are inside the cave, and the first thing in front of you is the door: a large green door with eight keyholes. Every key has to be slotted, all eight at once — if you are one short the mechanism will not trigger, and you will have jumped for nothing.
| Where the keys come from | Fishing the glowing key marker in a marked pond, and/or frogs dropping them |
| Fishing gear | The basic rod from the Fishing Cabin |
| Kill route | Purple frogs drop keys relatively often; Blue frogs rarely |
| Count needed | 8, placed together |
| Set count per map? | Sources disagree — see below |
The disagreement that matters here. Most guides say one key per pond, eight ponds, done. One detailed guide goes further and says the opposite: there is no fixed number of Frog Keys on a map, so you are free to farm frogs and fishing spots repeatedly until you have what you need. Both readings point to the same practical conclusion — fish the marked ponds first, kill frogs only to top up — because fishing is the reliable route.
What the Room Looks Like Inside
The cave is described as a single underground chamber. One source gives the closest thing to a floor plan: you arrive, and you are met with a few bodies of water, several frogs, and a chest on the other side of the room. Clear the room of frogs, and the Frog King appears. That ordering matters, and the next section is about exactly which of those two things happens when.
Two smaller naming notes. Some guides call the boss the Frog Prince; others call him the Red Frog King or the Orange Frog. And the 1% ranged drop is recorded as Blowdart by nearly every source, but as Blowpipe by one map guide. They are the same slot in the table.
When Does the Frog King Spawn?
This is a real disagreement between sources, not a wording wobble.
- One location listing says the Frog King spawns once all 8 keys have been used and the cave is unlocked — that is, the moment you open the door, he is there.
- A guide description says the opposite order: you clear the room of frogs first, and then the Frog King appears.
Our reading: the two can both be true. The King is tied to the unlocked cave, so the game can have him present from the door opening — but what the player can reach is gated behind the wave gauntlet. What this means in practice is that the room drain is the thing you must plan around, not the King's exact spawn flag. Clear the frogs, and he comes. Do not sprint past the waves hoping to reach the chest, because the chest is behind him.
The Cascade: What Happens When You Kill Him
This is the part that decides whether a run goes well, and it is the part our own boss page has to leave for a location write-up because it is about the room, not the fight. The arithmetic — 2, then 4, then 8 — is spelled out on Frogs; this section is the cave-specific version of it.
The Frog King splits when he dies. Every source describes the same chain:
Frog King → 2 Purple Frogs → 4 Blue Frogs → 8 Green Frogs
That is fourteen frogs standing where one boss was, counting out from his death — and Green Frogs are the only tier that does not split further. Our calculation, from the published doubling; the two Purple, four Blue and eight Green figures each come out of the same stepped description.
Kill him in a crowded corner and that is how you lose a run you had already won. The advice that follows from it is specific:
- Fight him in the open part of the chamber, where the spawned frogs cannot box you in.
- Do not land the last hit early. Get the room in front of you first.
- Have a ranged weapon in hand for the cascade, since the frogs arrive in a spreading wave and you want them met at distance.
- He moves fast for his size — a walk speed of 24 is published for him — so a slow party weapon will feel like it is lagging behind him.
What the Cave Is Actually Worth
Ranked by what you come out with:
| Reward | The honest version |
|---|---|
| Beastmaster badge | Defeat the Frog King. This is the reason to run it. The badge's requirement is stated identically by every source we checked. |
| Frog Chest rolls | Poison Spear 3%, Poison Armour 1%, Blowdart 1%, Frog Boots 1%. Low, and a farm, not a one-and-done. |
| Meat | The chest also gives a large amount of meat, which is why some players keep running it after they have the gear. |
| Cave pond fishing | A second roll of the same pool, if the chest missed. |
| A class route | The Poison Master is themed around all of it — the armour, the spear, the poison build. |
On the badge, one correction is worth making. A badge named Beastmaster, awarded for defeating the Frog King, is real: the game's badge list, two independent badge round-ups and a dedicated entity page all state it, alongside IGN's key guide. One source is wrong about it. That source treats the Beastmaster badge as a chest drop, and credits the same page with inventing a set of frog crafting recipes that no other source mentions — and that part is genuinely fabricated, because no frog-themed weapon or armour in this game has a recipe. The badge is real; the "you get it out of the chest" framing is not. Our Frog King page previously threw out the badge along with the fake recipe. That was too blunt; the badge stands and the recipe does not.
Where the sources split on the payout: the Beastmaster badge is listed at 4 diamonds by two sources and 2 diamonds by two others, with a fifth giving a 2–4 range. The requirement is not in dispute; the reward number is. Assume neither until you have checked your own badge popup.
And a note on the chest. The location listing marks the Frog Chest as guaranteed — that label refers to the container existing and sitting in a fixed spot behind the King, not to what is inside it. The percentages above are what the container rolls. Do not read "guaranteed" as "guaranteed loot"; that is the mistake the temple's chests invite instead, where both chests are flagged not guaranteed.
The Cave Pond
With the King down, the water in the chamber becomes useful: fishing it uses the same loot pool at the same rates as the chest. If the roll came up empty on the piece you were chasing, fish for it before you climb out — it costs you nothing but rod time, and it saves a second eight-key trip. Bring an upgraded rod and food; this is a patience check. Full armour route detail is on How to Get the Poison Armour.
How the Frog Cave Compares
| Frog Cave | Ice Temple | Cultist Stronghold | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biome gate | None documented — the pond comes to you | Snow, and Snow competes with Volcanic for the outer ring | None |
| Entry gate | 8 Frog Keys + Campfire 2 | None — walk in, break the beam | Raid timing |
| Main reward | Beastmaster badge; 1–3% chest rolls | Cultist Gems from the beam | Diamonds |
| Badge | Beastmaster | Ice Sculpting | Infiltration |
| Repeatable | Yes — a farm loop | Yes | Yes |
The shape to notice: the Ice Temple and the Stronghold hand you their main reward every time, and the Frog Cave is the only one of the three whose gear payoff is a dice roll. Its compensation is that it does not care which outer biome you rolled, and its badge does not depend on a drop rate at all.
Where Sources Disagree or Are Silent
- Campfire Level 2 as a gate — one location listing only; every guide-level source omits it.
- The frog key count is not fixed on one detailed guide versus the one-key-per-pond consensus elsewhere.
- When the Frog King spawns — on unlock, or after the room is cleared. Unresolved; see above.
- The Beastmaster badge's diamond reward — 2 or 4, sources split.
- Is the cave biome-locked? One map guide files it under the Jungle biome; the guide-level accounts describe the entrance pond arriving near your campfire instead. We cannot resolve it, and the practical answer is the same under either reading: you need keys, not a biome.
- No source publishes the Frog King's health or damage, the Frog Chest's total item count beyond the single container, or a drop rate for the meat.
- Frogs themselves are conditional — they are not in every run, so the key farm can be unavailable on a given map.
FAQ
Do I need a biome for this? Nothing we can find says so. The entrance pond is reported to appear near your campfire rather than inside a biome — though one map guide does file the cave under Jungle. One source lists the cave as a Conditional structure, which means it depends on frogs existing, not on terrain.
What is the Campfire Level 2 for? It is listed as a prerequisite on the game's own location page. Single-source, so we would test it rather than trust it, but plan to have a level 2 fire before you go key hunting.
How many keys, and where? Eight. Fish the glowing key marker in marked ponds for the reliable route; killing frogs is a top-up, with Purple frogs dropping keys fairly often and Blue frogs rarely.
What happens if I kill the Frog King? He splits into two Purple Frogs, then four Blue, then eight Green — fourteen frogs, if none of them are cleared. Kill him in open ground with a ranged weapon in hand.
What do I get out of it? The Beastmaster badge first, then the Frog Chest (Poison Spear 3%, Poison Armour 1%, Blowdart 1%, Frog Boots 1%) and the cave pond's same-pool fishing.
Is the Beastmaster badge real? Yes — the badge exists and its requirement is to defeat the Frog King, per the game's badge list and several independent round-ups. What is fake is the claim that you pull it out of the Frog Chest.
Can I run it more than once? Yes. Nothing marks it one-time, and the low rates are exactly why it stays a farm loop.
Is it worth eight keys? For the badge, the answer is yes and it does not depend on the drops. For the Poison Spear specifically, the 3% roll is the argument against treating this as a weapon route — see How to Get the Poison Spear.

Checked 2026-10-02. The structure type, the Conditional flag, the Common rarity, the two prerequisites, the whirlpool entrance, the two inhabitants, the Frog Chest being guaranteed and behind the King, and the frogs-in-waves on entry all come from 99-nights-in-the-forest.com's location listing. The eight-keyhole green door, the port pond arriving near camp after roughly three to four in-game days, the frog spawn timing around Day 3 / 10 minutes in with the "Something has emerged from the ponds" message, and the advice to clear the room before the King appears come from the same wiki plus Deltia's Gaming and Play Trucos, with the no-diving sign at the whirlpool pond and the "no fixed number of Frog Keys per map" claim from VG247. The Fishing Cabin rod and the floor-plan description of the chamber (bodies of water, frogs, chest on the far side, King after the clear) are IGN's key guide. The Frog King's split chain into two Purple, then four Blue, then eight Green, and his walk speed of 24 are stated consistently by RBLXGuide's entity page, the same site's Frog King page, the entities listing on 99-nights-in-the-forest.com, Propel RC's mob list and Finding Dulcinea's mob round-up. The drop rates (Poison Spear 3%, Poison Armour 1%, Blowdart 1%, Frog Boots 1%) are identical across the Fandom wiki, Roonby, Noleep and Pro Game Guides, and match our own Poison Spear and Frog King research; the cave pond fishing the same pool at the same rates is the Fandom page plus Gamezebo's frog write-up, with the location corroborated but not the numbers by two other guides. The Beastmaster badge and its "defeat the Frog King" requirement are stated by the Fandom badges list, TechWiser, Finding Dulcinea, RBLXGuide, All Things How and IGN; the 2-versus-4 diamond split is between the same set of pages. The Jungle-biome filing of the cave is RBLXGuide's map locations guide alone. The split total of fourteen frogs is our calculation from the published doubling. We did not use 99nightsintheforest.wiki, which is on our blacklist: it publishes a "Beastmaster Badge" as a chest drop alongside a set of frog crafting recipes that no other source mentions and that contradict the drop-only nature of frog gear — the badge in our own text is the real achievement, sourced independently above.
