The Bear
The Bear in 99 Nights in the Forest is the bruiser of the forest: HP and damage, where it spawns (Cultist Hunter Camp, Locked Caves, Snow at night), what it drops (Morsel, Steak, Bear Pelt, Yellow/Grey Keys), how to fight it, and how to tame it.
The Bear is the heavy hitter of 99 Nights in the Forest — the killable entity with real weight behind it. It drops the food and pelts you need, it guards the keys that open deeper caves, and — unlike The Wolf — it is a late-game taming project. This page covers its stats, where it shows up, what it pays out, and the two ways to deal with it: shoot it or befriend it.

How It Behaves
A Bear is slower than The Deer but hits far harder, and it has a long detection radius — once it locks on, it chases for a long time and will not simply give up.
- Where it spawns: deeper Forest regions (away from the starting camp), the Snow biome at night, the Cultist Hunter Camp, and inside Locked Caves (as a guardian).
- It teleports home. If you lure it too far from where it spawned, it vanishes in a puff of smoke and returns to its post. You cannot permanently drag a Bear away — kill it where it lives.
- It gets stuck on geometry. Like The Wolf, a Bear pathing-locks on rocks, trees and building corners. Use that to kite it safely.
What It Drops — and Why You Hunt It
| Drop | Amount | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Morsel | 6 | Food (cook it); also Bear taming food |
| Steak | 3–4 | Food (cook it); core Bear taming cost |
| Bear Pelt | 0–1 | Trade at the Pelt Trader for tool upgrades |
| Yellow Key | 0–1 | From guardian Bears in Locked Caves — gates deeper cave progression |
| Grey Key | 0–1 | From guardian Bears in Locked Caves — gates deeper cave progression |
The pelts fuel your gear, but the keys are the real prize: a guardian Bear in a Locked Cave drops one Yellow and one Grey Key, and those are what open the later missing-kids caves. See Missing Kids Locations for the rescue chain.
How to Fight It
- Ranged is strongly preferred. A Rifle or Laser Cannon keeps you out of its 40-damage reach. Revolver / Ray Gun are too weak for a 350-HP target.
- Bear Traps insta-kill a Bear in 4 hits. Place 4 traps in a 2×2 square, aggro the Bear, and lead it through. This is the best farm method for pelts and keys.
- Circle terrain. Kite it around rocks and trees; it locks on geometry and you get free hits.
- Melee is possible but risky. Strafe sideways out of its swing arc; never stand in front of it. Only attempt melee with good gear and healing.
- Don't bring pets unless you have spare Alpha Wolves. A Bear will switch targets to your pet and can delete it.
How to Tame It
The Bear is a late-game pet — tougher and more durable than The Wolf, and a genuine damage-soaker once tamed (same ~350 HP and ~40 damage on your side).
- Tool: a Taming Flute. Most guides point to a Strong Flute or higher; the exact tier shifts between runs, so check your own.
- Cycles: ~5 angry faces above its head (varies by run).
- Food: varies by run. The most commonly reported set is Steak ×5 + Pumpkin ×5 + Salmon ×5 (rblxguide); sportskeeda lists a Steak + Stew + Pumpkin variant. Read the speech bubble in your own run — the Bear's requirement is one that shifts between runs, like the Wolf's.
- Rule: the Bear must be undamaged to start the mini-game. A Bear that has already taken a hit cannot be tamed.
Full mechanics, flute tiers and the per-animal food table are on Taming Guide. For whether the Bear is worth the food versus other animals, see Best Pet.
What NOT to Do
- Don't melee a Bear with a weak weapon. 40 damage per hit ends a run fast.
- Don't lure it far from spawn. It teleports back; you waste the chase.
- Don't try to tame a guardian Bear mid-fight. It must be undamaged, and guardians are usually surrounded.
- Don't eat raw Morsel or raw Steak. Same rule as every animal — cook first.
