The Alpha Wolf
The Alpha Wolf in 99 Nights in the Forest is the upgraded Wolf: where it spawns (Snow biome at night, Forest with a Level 3+ campfire, Locked Caves), its stats, what it drops (Alpha Wolf Pelt, Blue Key), and how to tame it with a Good Flute.
The Alpha Wolf is what a Wolf turns into once the run gets serious — bigger, tankier, hits harder, and from Day 15 onward it starts showing up and leading packs. It is a genuine threat at night, but it also drops the Alpha Wolf Pelt that trades for a Rifle, and it is a strong combat pet if you can tame it. This page covers its stats, where it appears, what it pays out, and how to befriend it.

The Alpha Wolf at a Glance
| Type | Hostile, killable, tameable |
| HP | ~115–125 (sources range 90–150 — see below) |
| Damage | ~25 per hit (sources range 22–35) |
| Walk speed | ~26 |
| Tameable | Yes — a Good Taming Flute, 4 cycles |
| Active | Night; Snow biome, Forest with Level 3–5 campfire, Locked Caves, Cultist Hunter Camp |
| Drops | Morsel (2–3), Steak (1), Alpha Wolf Pelt (0–1), Blue Key (guardian) |
On the stats: guides disagree hard on the exact HP and damage. The two most specific numbers are 115 HP (dedicated entity wiki) and 125 HP (pockettactics); other guides list 90, 150, or a 100–150 range. Damage is reported between 22 and 35. Treat the precise figures as run- and patch-dependent and read the on-screen values in your own game. What every source agrees on: it is much tougher and harder-hitting than a normal Wolf, and it is fast.
How It Behaves
- It appears later. Most guides put the first Alpha Wolves around Day 15+, or any time once your campfire is Level 3–5. They spawn at night and vanish at dawn.
- It leads packs. Alpha Wolves often show up with normal Wolves and act as the pack leader, so a single encounter can spiral.
- It teleports home. Like every animal, if you lure it too far from its spawn it vanishes and returns to post. Kill it where it lives.
- It is repelled by a high campfire. A lit campfire at Level 5+ keeps them out of its radius — your safe zone (see How to Get Wood Fast).
What It Drops — and Why You Hunt It
| Drop | Amount | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Morsel | 2–3 | Food (cook it) |
| Steak | 1 | Food (cook it) |
| Alpha Wolf Pelt | 0–1 | Trade at the Pelt Trader for a Rifle or Strong Flashlight (see Best Weapons) |
| Blue Key | 0–1 | From guardian Alpha Wolves — gates deeper Locked Caves |
The pelt is the real prize: it is one of the few things that buys you a Rifle from the Pelt Trader. The Blue Key comes from a guardian Alpha Wolf in a Locked Cave and opens later cave progression — see Missing Kids Locations.
How to Fight It
- Ranged is safest. A Rifle or Revolver keeps you out of its bite; a Wolf pet can body-block it.
- Strafe and circle. Like a normal Wolf it pathing-locks on rocks and trees — kite it around geometry and take free hits.
- Don't fight a pack. One Alpha Wolf is manageable; a pack is not. Pull it away from the others before you engage.
- Bear Traps work. They chunk it hard; stack a few if you are farming pelts and keys.
How to Tame It
The Alpha Wolf is the first Good Flute pet — a real step up from the Wolf and a strong combat companion once tamed.
- Tool: a Good Taming Flute (Tier 2). The Old Flute will not work.
- Cycles: 4 angry faces above its head.
- Food: the most-cited version is 1 Steak + 1 Stew + 1 Corn per cycle (×4 = Steak ×4, Stew ×4, Corn ×4). Several other guides report a fish variant: 1 Steak + 1 Mackerel + 1 Salmon per cycle (×4 = Steak ×4, Mackerel ×4, Salmon ×4).
- Rule: the Alpha Wolf must be undamaged to start the mini-game, and you must not attack it beforehand.
The flute tiers and the full per-animal food table are on Taming Guide. The two food sets above are the only ones reported — read the speech bubble in your own run to see which one you got.
What NOT to Do
- Don't assume Wolf food works. The Alpha Wolf wants a Good Flute and a different (bigger) food stack than a normal Wolf.
- Don't engage a whole pack. Pick one off and separate it.
- Don't try to tame a guardian mid-fight. It must be undamaged, and guardians are usually surrounded.
