Ice Temple: the Frozen Beam That Gives You Cultist Gems Without Playing the Last-Kill Lottery

The Ice Temple is a two-floor ice-covered cultist structure in the Snow Biome. What the central Frozen Beam actually does (it is the loot and the trap at once), which gems come from it, the Ice Chest on the second floor and the Legendary Chest, what the Boost Pad Recipe Tablet unlocks, the Ice Sculpting badge, the owl sigil that explains The Owl, and why this beats the Cultist Stronghold for gems.

Updated 2026-10-02

The Ice Temple is the Snow Biome's most rewarding structure and the least obvious one. It looks like a vault. It is a vault — but the thing that opens it is also the thing that wakes three cultists inside it.

At the centre of the ground floor sits a giant Frozen Beam. Break it and you get Gem of the Forest and Cultist Gems out of it; at some point during the damage you hit, the cultists encased around it melt and turn hostile. That single interaction is the whole location, and this page is about the parts the structure's own description does not tell you: which loot comes from where, which chests are actually guaranteed, what the second floor holds, and why the gem route here behaves differently from everywhere else in the game.

What It Looks Like

Outside it is a two-storey stone structure thickly covered in ice, with spikes protruding from the walls. Inside on the ground floor the floor is iced over, there are two staircases on either side, and the cultists are frozen in blocks of ice around the beam in the middle. The second floor is reached by those stairs and holds the Ice Chest, which spawns on either the left or the right side — the left staircase leads to the left side, the right staircase to the right.

That last detail is worth acting on: go up before you start swinging at the beam. If you break the beam first, the melt is already running and you will be splitting your attention between a wave of cultists and a chest you have not opened yet.

The Frozen Beam — Loot and Trap in One Object

Everything about this location turns on the beam, and the important thing to understand is that it does two jobs at once.

  1. It holds the gems. The Gem of the Forest and the Cultist Gems are documented as contained within the beam, not dropped by anything you kill.
  2. It arms the room. As you damage it, the encased cultists melt and become hostile. Sources describe this as happening after a certain damage milestone — a threshold nobody has published a number for.

So the loop is three stages, not one: chip the beam until the milestone → deal with the melt → keep chipping until it breaks. The most common mistake is trying to do the melt and the beam at the same time. The documented advice is to stop hitting the beam, clear the melted cultists, then go back to it.

A related trick from one source: after the melt, stand in front of the entrance rather than deep in the room. The Frozen Beam sits in the cultists' line of sight, so the entrance is largely outside it — you get the same view of the room without being stood in the middle of it.

Where the Loot Actually Comes From

This is the part guides collapse into one messy list, so it is worth separating:

LootContainerGuaranteed?
Gem of the ForestThe Frozen BeamNo — sources say only that it is in the beam
Cultist GemsThe Frozen BeamNo — same phrasing, plural, no count published
Ice Chest (Ice Axe, Ice Sword, Frozen Shuriken, Fuel Canister, 1 Diamond)Floor 2, left or rightSources disagree — see below
Legendary ChestIn the templeMarked not guaranteed
Strong Axe, Strong FlashlightUnsettled — see belowNo

The strong tools are the shakiest rows. One source lists the Strong Flashlight and Strong Axe as things the temple contains, alongside the gems, but explicitly annotates the gems as the beam's contents and leaves the two tools unattributed. Elsewhere the Legendary Chest is a documented container whose table includes the Strong Axe — but not the Strong Flashlight. So the clean reading is: the Strong Axe plausibly comes from the Legendary Chest, and the Strong Flashlight's home is not settled. Do not build a run around either one.

On the "how many gems" question: no source we found publishes a count for the beam's contents. Gems are described in the plural and nothing more. If a guide tells you it drops a specific number, that number is invented.

The Chests, and the Name That Does Not Exist

A disagreement worth knowing before you go hunting. One source states an Ice Chest always spawns on the temple's second floor. The temple's own item listing marks both chests in the building as not guaranteed. We cannot resolve those two claims from the published tables, so the safe assumption for planning is neither chest is certain.

Then there is the naming question that trips people up, including our own earlier pages. The Ice Chest's verified contents are consistent across every loot table we found — Ice Axe, Ice Sword, Frozen Shuriken, Fuel Canister and one Diamond — and the confirmed Ice Chest spawn points are two: the Polar Bear Caves and this floor. The Cold Chest is a separate, lesser Snow structure chest (Ice Axe, Leather Body, Snowball, Fuel Canister, 1 Diamond).

What no loot table we can find lists is a "Silver Ice Chest" or a "Fancy Ice Chest" — only Ice Chest and Cold Chest. We are therefore treating Ice Chest as the verifiable container for the Ice Sword and Frozen Shuriken, and marking the other two names as unverified. Our own Ice Sword and Best Weapons pages used the "Silver Ice Chest" wording; that wording is not corroborated, and this page supersedes it. Both chests also have to be broken out of with an axe before they open.

The Boost Pad Recipe Tablet

The newest reason to clear this place, added with the Biome Refresher on 22 August 2026.

The Boost Pad Recipe Tablet is a frozen blueprint, encased in ice near the centre of the temple and freed by the same beam break. Take it back to camp and feed it to the Grinder beside the Crafting Bench, which permanently unlocks the Winged Boost Pad recipe. Using the tablet also awards the Aerodynamics badge.

Why it matters is the upgrade itself:

Boost Pad (base)Winged Boost Pad
How it firesYou charge it: hold Interact for about 5 secondsAutomatic, the moment you leave the campfire radius
EffectSame speed boost as eating a Chili, roughly triple normal sprint speedSame boost, no charging
Tell-talePale red body with darker red arrows when spent—
Unlocked byBench level 3The Boost Pad Recipe Tablet, ground at the Grinder

For a base that sits at the centre of a map whose outer rings kill you on a timer, a pad that fires itself on the way out is the difference between a camp and a functioning logistics point.

Single-source details, flagged: that the recipe needs Crafting Bench level 3 and 15 Wood + 10 Scrap to build, that the tablet requires Campfire Level 4 to reach, and that the temple is sometimes called the "Ice Palace" rather than the Ice Temple all come from one aggregator we treat as unverified. The tablet's existence, its location, the Grinder step, the Winged behaviour and the Aerodynamics badge are corroborated by the game's item listing.

Why the Gem Route Here Beats the Stronghold

This is the point most guides miss, and it is the one that decides whether you should bother.

Our own Cultist page documents the game's rule that a Cultist Gem drops from the last cultist killed in the run — which makes the Cultist Stronghold a lottery: you can do everything right and go home empty because someone else was your last kill.

The Ice Temple's gems are different. They are inside a container you open, not attached to a kill. Our reading: a gem you pull out of a broken beam is not subject to the last-kill rule, which is exactly why the temple is described as a steadier route — steadier being the operative word, not guaranteed. You are no longer betting on who died last; you are spending a beam break.

Two honest caveats. First, we cannot confirm from any source that the game applies the last-kill rule only to kills — it may or may not also police what a container gives you. Second, and more practically: the melted cultists you kill inside the temple are still kills, so if one of them happens to be the last cultist of your run, that one can drop a gem on the normal rule. The temple does not remove the rule. It adds a source that does not depend on it.

Either way, that is the answer to "where do I get Cultist Gems" that does not involve a fight you cannot control: the Frozen Beam.

The Owl Sigil

On the front of the temple, above the door, there is an owl drawing. That single detail explains something our The Owl page has to report with a hedge — that the Owl is "reported around the Ice Temple". The temple carries the owl's sigil, and the Owl is documented as patrolling the snow. The two are linked in the map, not just in rumour.

How to Run It

Check the biome first. The Snow sector competes with Volcanic for the outer ring, so the Ice Temple is not guaranteed to exist in your run. Do not set out from a camp you have not scoped.

Bring the right kit:

  • Warm clothing. The freeze meter is the quiet killer here; you will be standing still in one spot long enough to feel it.
  • An axe that can actually break ice. Any axe damages the beam; a Strong Axe is reported to make the exposure much shorter. This is the one piece of advice we would not skip.
  • Something that kills a Juggernaut. The temple holds one, and it is the reason the room punishes you for being careless.
  • Stews or food for warmth on a long break, if you have them.

Then: go up and take the Ice Chest first → chip the beam → on the melt, stop and clear one at a time, starting with the ranged one → return to the beam → take what falls → grab the Boost Pad Recipe Tablet on the way out.

If you just want the chests: one source points out the fight can be skipped entirely. Leave the beam intact, take the two chests and the ground loot, and come back later with a better loadout. Less loot, none of the pressure.

Where Sources Disagree or Are Silent

  • Is the Ice Chest guaranteed? One source says it always spawns on floor 2; the temple's own listing marks both chests as not guaranteed. Unresolved.
  • "Silver Ice Chest" / "Fancy Ice Chest." Neither appears in any loot table we could find. We treat them as unverified names for the Ice Chest.
  • Where the Strong Flashlight comes from is not settled, and only the Strong Axe has a plausible home (the Legendary Chest).
  • The beam's damage milestone has no published number, and neither does the beam's health, or how many gems it holds.
  • Campfire Level 4 as a gate, plus the Bench 3 / 15 Wood / 10 Scrap cost for the Winged Boost Pad, and the "Ice Palace" name, all trace to a single aggregator.
  • Ice Temple vs Ice Palace is a naming disagreement between sources; the temple pages we trust all use Ice Temple.
  • One source we do not rely on for mechanics (99nightsintheforest.wiki) is on our blacklist for fabricating weapon and class data; we used the location and loot tables from sources we can corroborate instead.

FAQ

Where exactly is the Ice Temple? In the Snow Biome, in the outer ring of the map. Snow competes with Volcanic for that ring, so it does not always generate. See All Locations or Snow Biome.

Do I have to break the Frozen Beam? To get the gems, yes — they are inside it. To get the chests, no; you can leave the beam intact and just open the two chests.

Why did cultists suddenly attack me? You hit the beam's damage milestone and the encased cultists melted. Stop hitting the beam, clear the melted ones, then resume.

Is there a second floor? Yes. Up the two staircases, and the Ice Chest spawns on the left or the right depending on which staircase you take.

What is the badge for? Ice Sculpting, for breaking the Frozen Beam. There is a second one, Aerodynamics, for using the Boost Pad Recipe Tablet.

What does the Boost Pad Recipe Tablet do? Unlocks the Winged Boost Pad recipe once ground at the Grinder. The Winged pad boosts you automatically when you leave the campfire radius, with no charging.

Does the gem here count toward the last-kill rule? The beam's gems do not come from a kill, so the last-kill rule does not obviously apply to them — that is the reading we take, and it is why the route is described as steadier. The cultists you kill during the melt still follow the normal rule.

Can I get the Ice Sword here? It comes from the Ice Chest on this temple's second floor, or from the Polar Bear Caves. See How to Get the Ice Sword.

The Ice Chest loot table (Ice Axe, Ice Sword, Frozen Shuriken, Fuel Canister, 1 Diamond) and the Cold Chest table are corroborated across three independent chest tables and a weapon-location list. The "Silver Ice Chest" and "Fancy Ice Chest" names could not be found in any chest table, which is why we do not use them. No source publishes the beam's health, the melt milestone, or a gem count.
